911e fuel sender

So when I tank my car up, the gauge reads totally full. After about 30 miles, it drops to reading 1/2 full. At about 100 miles, it is riding on the empty mark and just stays there. The tank and sender are brand new, installed by someone else. Does sender only go in one way? Thoughts?

The sender is easy to remove. It's a float that rides up & down on two wires on either side that causes a difference in voltage (or resistance - don't remember which) to give you the reading. Could be a faulty float, although it's been years since I disassembled one & I don't remember what the float was made of. Or could be a problem with the wires affecting the float. The wires are very thin. It shouldn't make a difference which way the contact plate on the fuel tank is facing. I'd take it out & look at it. Plus, do a search for fuel gauge sender. There are plenty of threads about them.
