shock roll pin

I am still confused on this shock business. What holds the lower end of the shock in the housing , the roll pin or the split pin that you install to hold the ball joint to the shock housing. That roll pin does not look strong to hold down the shock as it moves up and down. My car is a 1986 porsche targa 911
Thanks guys

The roll pin secures the insert. The split pin is only for the ball joint.

shock pins

Thanks for the info , How does the split pin hold the insert. I guess I am asking how to install the insert into the shock housing, put the insert into the shock housing and put the split pin in its hole in the housing and put the split pin in the groove on the insert on the end of the insert, is that right.
Thanks guy

The insert goes in upside down, the rod first. At the end of the rod is an annular groove. The first inch of the rod slides into a tunnel at the bottom of the strut and the annular groove lines up with the hole for the pin. Drive the pin in and it locks the insert into the strut.
