pop out rear windows 1984??

Has anyone converted fixed rear glass with earlier style pop outs?
I would like to do it on my 84.
What do I need?

Stephen

I don't know, but I've been thinking about it for a couple of years now. I happen to have a pair for my '84... I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. Cheers!

"Search" is your friend here. Lots of threads describing the mod.
I did this to my '83 SC.....not too difficult and does make a difference in getting airflow through the car.

Try this on for starters;

My '79 SC is a non-sunroof, no a/c car that is painted dark green, so anything I could do to improve ventilation is a help, so I backdated my quarter windows to pop-outs. I definitely recommend it. It greatly enhances fresh air ventilation on warm days, but also it helps circulate warm air from the windshield defrosters on chilly mornings and evenings so that your windshield is clear but you are also comfortable. On top of that, it greatly reduces wind buffeting when driving with the windows open. As in being able to carry a conversation at 100mph with the windows open.

Buy everything, not just the windows. You need the pivot plates, the latches, the lower window trim and the welting that goes around the entire pinch weld. The best is to find ads on the classifieds that are marketed that way, take the pictures so you can identify the parts and then start collecting. Also, make sure you get LWB windows, the SWB ones are all over eBay, but they are just a little bit smaller in every dimension. Also get brand new, genuine gaskets from our host. And get a nut-cert driver from McMaster Carr and use nut-certs at the hinge. If you skimp on any of these, you'll get leaks.

good points, Will.

Doing the research and reading here on PP, gave me the confidence to
tackle the installation of pop-outs on my SC.

My SC had the holes for the latches, so I used the nut-serts there.....at the
hinge, I had to tap the factory-installed plates in the B-pillar.

Recently did this in my '80 SC. When you buy the windows make sure they have latches. The rest can be found separately. The latches though are $200 a set typically where a full set of windows with latches are also $200.

Feel free to message me is you have any specific questions.

Some of the hard-to-find-used parts can still be purchased from Porsche thru our host.
I found the prices new were similar to the used ones for sale. The wider lower trim was hard to find used....I bought new, plus many other pieces.

Looking at doing this mod / upgrade as well to my 79. It would be great if someone has the list of parts and part numbers and could post it.

Cheers Al

Yes that would be great. I want to do it, but a shopping list would make it much simple.

Do you have a photo of the inside of the window where the hinge is and where it latches in the back.

Thank You

Feel around on the inside C-pillar. You will be able to feel 3 holes. This is where the hinge mounts. All 911's have it. The early ones are hinged. You will need to poke holes in your headliner at these 3 holes and install nutserts.

Those rivnuts are 7mm for M5 screws. The holes in my C-Pillar are 7mm so those would be the correct nuts, however the screws I have for my latches are M4 and the holes in the latches will not accommodate an M5 screw. The M4 rivnuts want a 6mm hole.

Any ideas how I might proceed? The rivnuts open up by about 1mm when compressed, but not sure if the m4 version will snug up in a 7mm hole or not...

Thanks for any help.
Bill
