clutch engage/release question
background: 86 Targa, 110K, clutch has about 20K, I recently have replaced the clutch cable, helper spring, all shifter bushings, motor and tranny mounts, replaced oil with swepco, and all adjustments done to specs per Bentley manual.
problem: clutch engages very near the floor, about an inch or so. This makes feathering the throttle difficult while shifting to make a nice smooth shift. I believe a longer throw would also help when upshifting to second. Of course the 1-2 shift is the most critical for autocrossing, and the only one I'm having any trouble with. question: what adjustment would allow the clutch to engage higher on the pedal travel? If you performed the "1.2-to-1.0" adjustment at the trans end of the clutch cable correctly you should be engaging a bit further up than you currently are. I am not sure on this one, but after checking and getting this adjustment done my clutch engagement moment moved from close to the floor to further up the "throw."
By the way, how was the clutch "ear" bushing (the little one) that goes on the clutch pedal bit in the tunnel, where the trunnion pin connects? Was it shot? Did you have a notch in the metal? John

that bushing was OK.
I will redo the adjustment to see what happens. Any other experiences with this problem? |

I performed the same operation on my clutch cable, and helper spring a few months back and before doing it, the clutch was engaging too close to the floor. After adjusting at end of cable per spec in Haynes manual [I know, I should get the Bentley manual], the engagement begins about 33% way up from the floor. This is easier for me at least to accomplish smooth shifts. One thing you might check is the adjustable block on the floor board for whether you have it too restrictive [i.e., preventing you from pushing far enough].
good luck, your problem is definitely an easy fix one way or the other todd =-=-=-=-=- 86 Cpe |
