problem with turn signals - help needed
I searched the forum, and didn't see anything with this same description.
I have a problem with my flashers (and my right side marker) that seems odd to me. None of my turn signals are working, including the indicators on the tachometer. However, when I turn on the hazard lights, all four of the turn signal lights work. When the headlights, parking lights, and headlights with fog lights are on the left turn signal and left side marker are not coming on. I checked the bulbs - they look fine and there doesn’t appear to be any corrosion. The relay works - I hear it clicking when I turn on the hazards, but no clicking when I use the turn signal stalk. I changed the relay to check, nothing changes. I took the steering column apart to take a look. I tried testing for continuity at the turn signal contact - 49A to 49L for left turn and 49A to 49R for right turn. Here’s the weird thing - whenever I connected the probe contacts (say to 49A and 49L) then both turn signal indicators on the tach would flash quickly, but I don’t believe the actual turn signals flashed or the relay clicked (though I don’t remember for sure). It seems like it could be a ground issue, but nothing changed in the wiring that would have suddenly caused this. And I don’t see any leakage. So, any thoughts or guidance? Is this an issue with the switch? Any other ideas? Thanks! Todd |

Todd,
Its a weird problem for sure...I will try first an Electric Contact Cleaner spray. Disconnect and clean all rubber contact plugs, male and female connecting sides. Start with the front inner fender connectors first and the flasher and relay plugs next. Use a little dielectric grease on the pins. If you have the original fuse block also clean all fuses after spraying them and clean with a scuff pad or sandpaper. I was going crazy and the original fuses and connectors were the culprit. They had a thin powdery substance on the ends (electrical corrosion?)and was preventing a good connection? Best to you, Jose |

I had this problem and it turned out to be the fuse. Brake lights are on the same fuse so if your brake lights aren't working either then most likely it is the fuse.
