Gas Gauge...delamination?

87 turbo look, the combo gas/oil level gauge works great, except there was this white-ish appearance over the gas gauge portion. Looked almost like superglue.

Just pulled the gauge apart:

1. The glass..is glass? My speedometer lense was plastic.

2. The glass seems to have a clear sheet of what appears to be vinyl on the inside surface. It's perfectly clear on the oil level side, but there appears to be a glue residue on both the glass and the vinyl on the gas gauge side.

Can anyone fill me in on whether this is normal, or not normal for a stock gauge?

I don't understand why it would have glass and why the glass would have vinyl on it, as the gauge looks entirely electronic to me?

As far as I can tell, I could remove the vinyl and scrape the glass off to clean it up.

Thanks in advance.

I believe that is the remains of the "Unleaded fuel" sticker

On my gauge, the unleaded sticker is rectangular and on the outside of the lense.

The vinyl I’m talking about is circular and covers the entire inside of the lense.

I have the same happening on my oil level gauge. I was thinking of getting the gauge disassembled to get this fixes. It looks bad.
I think you need a special tool to remove the bezel, some shops have that.

I used the screwdriver method described in the speedo and clock articles.

It looks like I could just peel the vinyl off. If would be nice to know it’s purpose before I do it though.

The vinyl is on the glass as a safety feature to prevent shatter in a crash. (I guess it’s cheaper than safety glass). When mine was foggy I just scraped it off with a razor blade. It’s clear as a whistle now. Pelican used to sell replacement glass for these (maybe they still do).

I don't see a picture. From what you describe this happened to my gas gauge.
I took it to Palo Alto Speedo and they installed a new glass and "unleaded" sticker.

If this were the case, wouldn't the vinyl need to be on the outside of the glass? Mine is on the inside.

My current guess is that the vinyl was to keep the glass from rattling against the metal ring.

Anyways, my gauge needle paint is here and now that the needles are touched up, as soon as my flat black gets here I'll touch up the rings and then put it back together and back in the car.

Wondering if a little ring of RTV or something like caulk would keep the glass stuck to the ring and prevent any possible rattle?
