Stereo for 71 Targa - What to do?
I have an original 71 911T Targa with a non-functional stereo. I am refreshing the carpet and interior and would like to install some decent sounds without destroying the original look of the car. Currently the car has an aftermarket Pioneer deck that fits the original holes for the head and knobs. It has square speaker grills (I assume they are speaker grills) half way in the door pocket below the window crank. There are no speakers in the rear nor does there seem to be a hole or indentation in the sheet metal to handle them. This is a very nice car but I am not concerned with concours rules as much as I am keeping the original appearance. What have other early 911 owners done and what would work best for reasonable top off motoring?

My car is newer so I don't really care about originality, but if I had an old long hood car like yours I'd be thinking the same way. One think I thought about the stereo was that I'd get a nice, working, period correct example with an FM tuner. Then put a 6 disc CD changer in the trunk that modulates the signal though the FM band. Hide the controller somewhere, put some decent speakers under the stock grills, and you have 00's technology behind your 70's stereo.

Brock,
Nice collection! I just have front speakers in my car which are also where the front door pockets used to be. I have seen some people mount speakers onto the rear shelf. The speakers have to be the self contained ones, not recessed. FWIW, you will probably want an amp. I used to have my brother's amp, but he took it back. Without it, I can hardly hear my radio at speed.

Brock,
My 69E had factory Blaupundt stereo. Speakers on rear shelf are in boxes big enoough for small 4" speakers. Attach with metal right angle bracket that is inside of box and screws into rear shelf panel. On mine there are no door speakers. That is probably an aftermarket installation even though there are holes in the door for speakers. My front speaker (6x9) is one channel and both rear speakers are the other so stereo was/is front to back. In looking at getting a new stereo one shop suggested putting two 3" speakers in the front grill and then using my old shlf enclosures for the rear. The new stereos have too much power to run one channel through one speaker as Porsche originally did. THis shop even has a plastic bracket that they use to mount two 3" speakers in the space of the 6x9 front speaker. Hope this gives you some ideas. Jim

In looking at Peter Morgan's book "Original Porsche 911" none of the pictures show a door speaker for the 2.2 cars. If the exisitng crappy speakers are non-original, I guess I can put whatever I want as long as it fits the hole. (looks like 5 1/4) Also, everyone agrees an amp is a good idea.
Now, do I keep the Pioneer am/fm cassette that fits the original openings, install an original am/fm Blau w/ a cd changer in the trunk, or install something more modern (do I have to cut the dash?)? Also, do I forget about putting speakers in the back, or does someone know of a good solution for the back side panels or rear shelf?

hehe...I got an orig radio for my Targa, but it took so long for it to get to Hawaii from Germany, I put a CD deck in, replaced 2 crappy speakers on the door, and put 2 small boxes under the rear seats(folded down, nobody but my small kids goes back there.)
It was easy and took 1 afternoon...all I had to do was route wires to the back...piece of cake!! Something interesting popped out from under the rear carpet when I was puting the wires in- a cocaine vial with a little spoon!!! I figured well duh! It came from So Cal. in the late '80's... Nuff said.

Where did you find an original Blaupunkt Frankfurt-US? Also. isn't that a mono radio? Is there a more modern radio that is a shaft stye radio that fits the small opening in the dash? I think high end co-ax speakers in the door with an 2x50 amp is going to do the trick. I assume your CD changer plays through the FM band on the radio?

I think the new deck is a Pioneer, I havent put the Blau in yet, Im also using a very small amp to drive the 2 door speakers. The 2 rear boxes are Pioneer self amplified and run straight from the deck...theres the repro decks in Tweeks(for example) that have all modern capabilities, you might check those out...
