Shift Rod Bushing Bracket Install
 

I am having quite a time tying to reinstall the shifter after replacing the bushings. The shift rod bushing bracket (#21 in the diagram) sits so low in the tunnel that when I line up the shifter and try to install the two smaller bolts into the bracket , the screws dont reach the brackets. Any suggestions?

It goes on top of the tunnel, not under it.

the bracket #21 is installed in such a way that the angled bit with bores hooks on top of the tunnel (bushing O facing down) and the shifter base sits on top.

You have #25 180 degrees out.

John, I never got around to thanking you for your expertise.

My shifter, shifter rod, coupler and trans had been making weird noises since I bought the car in 2017 (912E - 20 yr garage find)).

Make a long story longer, I replaced the above mentioned items, plus the three plastic retainers holding the throttle rod inside the tunnel.
It never occurred to me that the last person to work on the shifter tower (installed a short shift kit) had installed the rod bushing carrier incorrectly. The carrier was completely inside the tunnel.
So, each time I went chasing the problem, I kept installing it in the same position it was in before I started. ( I actually got pretty proficient)

So, your simple sentence 'It goes on top of the tunnel, not under it' gave me all the info I needed to finally fix my noises.

I took mine apart a few months ago and did not get back to the install for a couple weeks struggling mightily upon trying to reinstall it. after 30 minutes fighting it and swearing I finally figured it out... I was so pissed cause ive done it around 10 times over the years...

I thought I was the only one! Shifts smoothly now!

i replaced all my bushings in the first year I had the car, and almost got this wrong, too - it's easy to miss. I had removed it from its correct position on top of the tunnel, but by the time I put it back I had almost forgotten this and kept trying to put it under because it seemed more right.

I think i might have to go and check mine. I have a feeling i have made this same mistake when i had mine apart recently.
