75S engine rebuild
I'm rebuilding a 75S, 2.7 engine.........This is a stock rebuild (it happens). This will be the full meal deal......Thursdays progress......

the seamy underbelly
wow...this one is a mess.....lots of leaks with JB weld used as a seam sealer.....original smog pump manifold and injectors.....this should be a total beeyatch to get apart...however, due to the oil, the exhaust came off without a struggle....this one is definitely due for a rebuild.....behold

Is this one staying CIS? Or are you working some induction magic on this one too? :)
|
No, unfortunately no EFI magic on this one....a stock rebuild....and it needs it.......but I have two other engines underway....a 2.7RS-ish and a 3.2....those two will have to satisfy my EFI obsession.....

messy
Wow....this is a messy one.....however, the oil inside the engine is very clean.....I think that this one leaked so much, it got a constant supply of fresh oil...rockers and cams look great. One head nut was off and the rest of them were so loose, I could just about loosen them with my finger tips....I thought that maybe it was the result of the head-studs pulling a bit.... and it might be....but all cam housing and the case perimeter nuts were also very loose....in fact....almost every fastener, with the exception of the cam nuts and rocker nuts...were not tightened near to spec........it has made taken this one apart pretty easy, to date...although there is one nut, covered with JB weld that might be on pretty tight...... behold the filthy beast....

I like the orange silicone on the intakes.

Al, do you do your own machine work? Will you be installing case savers etc, yourself?
Hoping you document what work is carried out on the case. |
Nope...heads out to Craig Garrett, case out to Ollie's

innie
Crank looks good.....main bearings are slightly worn....overall, internals are not too shabby.....

head studs
As I was disassembling the engine, the head stud nuts were so loose, I could almost turn them by hand. It took almost no force at all to remove them.......and here is why.

Been working on these cars since 1971. The beauty of those internals still amazes me. |
tasty
Even the stock 2.7 CIS pistons and cylinders look tasty, right out of the box......

Is that a 5 cylinder engine?

Well, after 45 yrs, was the heli-coil/threaded insert/case saver/time cert head stud fix debate settled? Or is that like the dreaded dilivar / Supertec debate? |

shiny heads
The heads for the 75S are looking a lot better now that Craig Garrett (CGarr) has worked them over...........
if you need your heads rebuilt...he is the man. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1589498885.JPG |

clean machine
the 75 2.7S is cleaning up nicely. This is just a stock 2.7S CIS engine....but they need a little love too!
Cams are timed.....so it should be on the test stand, next week. I still need to test the injectors, refurb the engine shroud, wiring harness....test the CIS system, etc......but getting close to......fire..... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1590883361.JPG regards, al |
getting closer
Should have this on the test stand tomorrow/Monday.........looking a lot better now....

all is good in my little world....
It all turned out right in the end. The stock 2.7S is installed back into the 75......starts, runs, stops....no drips on the floor.....a good day...........

Nice work Al - I had Ollies do all my magnesium engine block inserts 12 years ago - and 60,000 miles later, no issues. Your engine work looks great. Glad it worked out well.

Rex, good to hear from you. Ollie's is definitely the place to go....I have a 2.2 to 2.5 engine rebuild in the works....my case has been at Ollie's for 2 months now and will likely be there for another month....really putting a crimp in the schedule..... regards, al |
