3.2 911: what to do with an old OEM catalytic converter?

From a late '80s 3.2 Carrera:

So, what do I do with an old OEM catalytic converter + shield, etc. that's getting tired (150K miles or so). In other words, to pass California emissions this time, the car needed a new CARB certified cat from DEC. It passed two years ago, so I think it's losing ability to catalyze. Admittedly, the car in question has some mods during its rebuild a few years back, like a SW chip and 964 cam so maybe it'd still pass in a stock 3.2 911, I dunno.

Too bad it can't be refurbished. I hate to toss it, and the feds say selling it is illegal.

Thanks for your input.

Hollow it out and sell it as a test pipe to someone in a non-emissions controlled state.

I’ll gladly buy the shield and if you want to throw in the cat so that it’s a matched set I’d appreciate it *♂️

proporsche, here's the long backstory (honestly, I don't know the exact miles on the used cat ... what I stated was only an estimate):

Help/ideas please: 3.2 Carrera bucking/surging going 2500 to 3000 RPM

Hi..i see but there is not a problem to pass the smog on the paper what i see??Cat has to be hot in order to pass the CA smog that is normal;-) so,keep it it has a pretty big value-still

Ivan

what do you have on the car now ..strait pipe?Would make sense since the smog is every 2 year in Ca ,correct? At least that is what i did for 14 years in LA ..with mine...

Here in California... I say just keep it and stash it away in the garage or closet.
Could come in handy for you or someone else someday.

Contents should be recyclable (platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh). That's why Cats are stolen from vehicles.

Recycle it, some are quite valuable. I have got as much as $150 for one. We sell all our old ones to a Recycling Ctr. depending upon where your you may have to produce registration and driver's license. (we have a problem with stolen cats here on east coast) so they may wish to know where it came from..
