How to do this?

Am wanting to make a piece for a 2nd oil filter. I have made a plate that covers the 3 oil holes on the side of the engine where the oil cooler used to sit. I will attache an oil filter console from a 70-71 911, to that plate. my question; other than the large perimeter 0 ring, how are the inlet and outlet holes on the console sealed to the tank? Thanks, Bob

Why add an oil filter? couldn't you change your existing filter more often?

Look at the oiling system diagram. Nothing filters the oil on the pressure side of the oil pump and therefore circulates any trash around the engine until it gets filtered after the return from the front cooler(s). ALL of the later model engines (Metzger) put a filter on the pressure side of the pump, to filter oil just before going to the bearings.

Dannobee, That is the purpose of this filter. The RSRs did it, they felt it purposefull, and as per your description and my understanding, that is why you want it there. I already have a set up for one engine, had blocked off that area on the second motor, and thought, a little more work and you can have a second filter on #2 as well. But my question still is, how specifically is that console sealed to the oil tank. PET doesn't show any gasket or seal other than the big 0 ring. Thanks, Bob

It's metal to metal, no gasket. In the normal application, there's not much pressure there, since it's on the scavenge side.

If it were me, I'd drill and tap your plate for AN fittings (or weld some in place) and put the oil filter somewhere it's easier to service. Good job on the plate, btw.

I see some issues with this setup.

You realize that that filter is smaller than the ones used starting in '72?

You realize that the filter has an internal pressure relief by- pass valve set at something like 38 psi?

You will probably restrict the flow to the motor.

Some racers have used full flow filters with disastrous results. There were some threads years ago about this.

As long as you use a "regular" oil filter, you'll be fine. I think the stock ones for the 993's were Mahle OC 229, IIRC.

So right now, I have Bosch 72199WS (pre 72 filter) threaded onto the console. Physically it is the same size as the ones that succeeded it except for the smaller threaded spigot. Do not want to over engineer myself into a disaster. Am slow to understand the bypass, non bypass feature in the console and filter. I could see wanting a bypass in the console in case the filter became restricted. Really not sure in the diagram sent by trackrash how that tandem works. I am currently running a NAPA gold 1553 on an engine (conventional single filter system) simply because a friend of mine who has raced for 50 plus years successfully, uses that, and he explained why and now I forget. The possibility of cold oil collapsing the filter is concerning and would like to bypass that ambush. Trying to understand that. Thanks some more, Bob

OK, looking at the picture a bit more. If the filter becomes restricted, both valves seem to operate in symphony, allowing oil to continue to flow assuming the filter restriction doesn't block the escape route. I think I will cut this filter open to examine it as I have never given oil filters much thought.

I have one of those and it is going on one of 3, well 2 motors, as one is still in the oven. As I have already built a block off plate for one of the motors, I felt I could easily adapt this early console for this particular application. The prudent effort would be to just buy another piece, I know.

But why delete a so vital cooler ?!
No other way to do it AND keeping the oil cooler?!
