tune up issue
Hey there,
trying to find things to do during isolation, also decided to replace my spark plugs, cap and rotor. Plugs gapped, installed no issue. New rotor easily installed, cap. Turns out new cap was bad, so put old rotor and cap back on firing order is correct, and added a little dielectric grease to the spark plug wires. Fire the car up and it pops and sputters and is not running well. It was running like a champ prior to this. I have checked and check the firing order, make sure all the plug wires are seated. can't figure out what the issue is. Any insight would be appreciated. BTW its an 82, 911 SC 3.0 thank you in advance |
it is possible that one or two spark plugs have closed gap..double check that

can some lay out the correct firing order. I have the firing order sticker with the arrow pointing towards the fan? is that correct, that would mean that if you are looking at the back of the car, cylinders 1, 2,& 3 would be on the right hand side. from the back looking forward. Is that correct?
Any help is greatly appreciated. car runs, but not well thanks |
How old are your wires? Maybe the internals broke either on the wire or at the boot when they were removed. Check the resistance on each wire or remove one wire at a time while it's running to see if a cylinder isn't getting spark.

thank you. That is what I thought. I ordered new plug wires and will start again once they arrive from our host
thanks, |
Don't forget that the dist. turns counter clockwise.

Make sure your boots are seated correctly, they can be a little tricky.

I once cracked one of the resistors when pulling them off the spark plugs.
If you have a multimeter you can test the ohms from distributor cap to spark plug connection and check they are all more or less the same. |

I'm in the same boat and sinking fast. Cheers, Joe 87 Carrera |
Ha.... yeah. If it ain't broke, don't fix it ;)
|
yep, should have just left it alone. Well it gives me something to do I guess
|
What kind of plugs did you use?
|
I used NGK, same plugs I had in before
to be specific BPR7ES. 5534. Same plugs as previous |
Good on the plugs. Just checking. Could you have possibly knocked a vacuum line loose? If not, hopefully the new plug wires do the trick.

thank you to everyone offering their advice. Good news, plus, rotor cap replaced and brand new Clewett plug wires from our host. She runs like a champ again.
Super stoked. Now I need to find something else to do to stave off boredom. thanks, |
Good for you. Those plug wires get kinda sketchy when they're constantly exposed to heat/vibration. I've ruined more than a couple wires by messing with them.
If you're looking for something to do, why don't you bleed the brakes... is always nice to see the dark, cloudy stuff being replaced by clear fresh fluid. Gravity feed for a one man job is easiest... just keep a good eye on the reservoir level. |
