Wiring question
I’m re-wiring the fuel pump in my ‘73 Targa.
I’ve found a red wire with green tracer in the fuse panel which I am assuming is the original lead for the fuel pump, right? That terminal is shared by another plain red wire. Does anyone know what that second wire is used for? I’m trying to figure out if it’s original or something added by a previous owner. ![]() |

If it is actually red and black and not plain red (cannot see on the picture), it is original. It goes to terminal 15 of ignition switch (labeled 31 on diagram) via a connector (labeled 85 on diagram).
As for the red with green tracer, yes it is the wire that goes to FP via a 2-pin connector.

Here you go with diagrams in color for '73 CIS.

The Red wire is original. It powers the rear fuse panel and CDI unit.
When the ignition switch is in the run position 12V goes from the R/Bk to the #7 terminal on the fuse block. There is a strap on the fuse block connecting terminals 7 and 8. This supplies un-fused 12V to the R/Gn wire to the fuel pump in the engine compartment, and the Red wire position 8 to the engine fuse block and the CDI unit. That is why the fuel pump runs and CDI unit hums as soon as the key in turned on. In your other thread it seems you want to move the fuel pump to the front. You can pick up the feed at either position 7 or 8, but for safety reasons you might want to add an inline fuse, as Porshe did not use any protection originally. That is what I did when I put a 3.2l engine in my '73 and mounted the pump to the front cross member.
