Valkyrie Run

I thought it'd be cool to have a place for people to chat about the epic Valkyrie Run!
http://www.valkyrierun.com

Would love to meet other drivers who are participating, thinking about participating, share knowledge and advice, talk about the route, what to bring, your car, etc.

It's going to be an amazing trip!

78 SC from LA

Hey! I'm Lee, I'll be starting in Los Angeles. Never driven cross country before, but always wanted to! I've done 10 day trips on the motorcycle so I think it's comparable to this!
I'm pretty confident my sc is up for the task, but I am going through everything and assembling a tools and parts list for the journey.

What are your must do/haves for a trip like this?

Wow, I'm in the wrong country, but THAT would be my sort of drive.

Plus a bit of (tech) support from the other aircooled guys along the way in the unlikely event something should go wrong.

It's going to be epic. We'll be seeing you on Wednesday as the route passes through my hometown. It's going to be some FUN driving!

I've driven the Carrera to the Smokey Mountains twice, LA twice and Texas Hilly Country once. I always pack a bunch of *****, but the only things I remember using was my:
Valentine 1 radar detector
The cheap cigarette lighter splitter with integrated USB from Wal-mart. Game Changer
Rennline phone mount is another road-trip game changer
Extra engine oil
Paper towels and glass cleaner

My co-driver/wife really helps with a second set of eyes and has push started me a couple times when my starter acted up.

Make sure your tires aren't questionable and you have a fire extinguisher.
There will be enough people on the rally with spare parts and tools.

Just send it man!

Good call on the radar detector and phone mount, I usually jam my phone in the ashtray slot but can't charge it at the same time.

Thanks for the link, it’s a cool idea and looks like a lot of fun.

That’s a great looking SC. My only advice is to get a few shakedown runs in before hand, 5-10 trips of 60-100mi will inspire some confidence and may highlight any potential issues. The only other thing I would add is making sure your windshield wipers are in good shape, living in LA it’s something you may overlook.

1) Tow strap and knowing where to hook it up front and rear
2) spare fan belt and tools, knowledge how to change it
3) a real jack- decent aluminum one can be had at a fair price, jack stands to support the car, knowledge on where to place them without damaging the chassis
4) wheel chocks to keep the car from rolling when jacking it
5) set of warning triangle reflectors- you break down around a blind turn, and you will want to warn traffic coming up behind you
6) spare light bulbs- who wants to give LEO's excuse to pull you over
7) front and rear license plates (see above)< not all states go for a single plate on the rear
8) WATER
9) Check your alignment 3k miles across country with Auto X settings is no joke- you will wear out your tires before you get there
10) spare starter , cd unit, coil, fuel pump, relays, fuses < check to make sure your car is in good tune of course
11) TECH your car for leaks, brake condition, belts, loose stuff under the seats, battery secured, cables good ?
The above supplied by past experience with our own cars and other entrants in over 12 years of Targa California events
Others can chime in here with what I missed

Whatever TRE Cup advise.

And there is a hex socket sorta thing that you need for removing the cover over the fuel pump. I have one and keep it in the tool kit

You're right, just replaced them! If it were to rain heavily, is water in the engine bay an issue? My Bug would always sputter out in the rain.
I took out the ac, but should I put the rear condenser back on to help protect the distributor? Am I just being crazy?

It rained cats and dogs during the entire Drive OZ Rallye last October. Some of the cars didn't have heat or A/C. No problems. Send it. Send it. Send it.

Figure to drive out but ship back. Intercity is the designated hauler for Valkrie Run. They quoted me $2495 from Raleigh/Durham to Scottsdale. Have used Passport in the past and liked their service. Their no discount quote to me was $2392, less than Intercity.

Here is the kicker. A full truck is 6 cars. They get $11K and change for the run to Scottsdale. That works out to around $1800 per car. Is anyone interested in committing to Passport with me? If the drop city is different than Phoenix/Scottsdale, then pricing goes up. However, for ever car added to an order there is a discount.

My AC is long gone and my 911 sees rain and snow on the regular during the winter months, never had an issue with water in the engine bay.

This run sounds epic. Almost better than the show itself. (No disrespect to Howie & Patrick, but it's about driving these cars, isn't it?)

I'd add on an empty gas can to TRE's list of tools 'n supplies. There'll be one time you (or someone else in the group) will either need it or think they'll need it, and that guy will be glad someone thought ahead.
Extra oil, obviously.
Tire plugs/fix-a-flat/spare tire.
Stuff to clean the windshield. I tried following TRE on an evening twisty run, once. And couldn't see squat due to the glare on my windshield from the combination of splattered bugs and setting sun.
And TP. (Seriously. Many uses.)

I think that's outrageous. I've shipped enclosed many time for less. Last summer shipped from San Francisco to Detroit via Reliable for $2100. In 2018 from Phoenix to Detroit was only $1000 enclosed.

This does look like a really cool event. I almost wish I were further away. I'm thinking about joining but it would only be for the last leg or so, and I have to decide if that's worth $200ish for me. It would definitely be cool to be part of a huge pack of aircooled 911s.

Same here! I kinda wish I was able to start in Utah, but I feel like the last leg has got to be one of the best days for driving and the highest number of cars.

Yeah, I just got my quote too same price to LA. Having only shipped my motorcycle in a closed transport to Nashville (it was $500) I was a little taken aback at that "group rate"! I asked for clarification and they were super cool, I can see that Intercity knows what they're doing, but that's more than I'm planning on spending the whole trip!

I've been getting quotes via open transports for 700-1100 all day...

Was thinking of driving back too after the transport quotes started coming in. Maybe camp though... maybe just don't go back home ever!
