First Porsche in 16 years!

Well after 16 years of hibernation the wife finally allowed me to get another 911. She wasn't around the last time, so she really doesn't understand why I never shut up about Porsche's. The budget she gave me was tight ($15K) and the window of her approval I knew would be small so I had to jump (as in fast). I just wanted to get my foot back in the door with the hope that she will catch the bug too. Here is what I got:

Other pictures here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2493075842

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I wanted at least an '84 and something as original as possible. The car is located only a couple of hours away so that was another plus. I haven't picked it up yet (won't get it until Monday) but I did have it taken to a Porsche service facility near the seller and using the great checklist from this site had them go over it thoroughly. A/C and front brakes needed some attention, new rear shocks and a few other small details but other than that a clean bill of health. Getting her a full service as well.

A couple of questions for the experts.

1. Any idea as to the color name?
2. Anything else I should do right away?
3. Think I did okay for short notice?

Thanks for looking and for your comments

Ralph

Looks like a nice unmolested Carrera at a good price. By the way, do you presently own all the Porsches listed in your signature?

Nice looking car, I love the color combo. Looks like you got a good car at a good price. Congrats. I had an '88 and loved it. I think you'll find this '84 is a great car.

You may want to replace the 4 rubber brake lines, flush the brake fluid, check the rubber fuel line that runs across the back of the engine between the 2 fuel rails. You can't really see it normally, and it has a tendency to get old and hard and then crack and start spraying a fine mist of fuel around the engine compartment, it's only $50 and about 20-30 minutes to replace.

Replace those shocks, probably all 4 if you are doing 2. The tires look good, but you should have wider tires in the back than in the front, that's not clear from the ad. If you've got 225 50 all around then you'll probably want slightly skinnier tires in the front to get the balance back.

Again, beautiful car. Enjoy.

The color is most probably Ziegelrot, or brick red in english. Could be the kiln red mentionned by Bob. Looks good anyway!

The "other" possibly-bad fuel line could cost $500. Check both. If it's the expensive one...tend to it and maybe have a local hydraulic shop fab up a replacement for something less than totally insane Porsche prices....

Down here in Miami, Florida it would be Amazon Rubber. They've always been good to me and they also do custom steel braided lines. Just save the old fittings.

Thanks for all the replies. I've added all your comments to my to do list. I'll also definitley need to get the color sorted out so I can hunt down some touch-up paint.

Two more things speaking there of:

Is there a list of paint code numbers verses names so I can find out what it's actually called once I have the name?

Do you guys generaaly work through on-line sites to order touch up paint or do you just take it to a local auto paint supplier and have them mix you up some?

Ralph

Paint Scratch

That is a really neat site for touch up paint. Looks like it would be good for small road chips if the paint hasn't faded.

Lift up the front trunk lid. On the bottom side of the lid, somewhat in the center, will be a paper tag with the paint code and options for your car.

Ralph--
Congratulations and nice car. Your story sounds very similar to mine 4 years ago. My wife doesn't even ask anymore.

There were 3 reds offered in 1984:
027 Guards Red
810 Ruby Red Metallic
811 Kiln Red Metallic

from the pictures on ebay, I'm inclined to agree with Bob's Flat-Six that its Kiln Red, not Ruby Red as I've always thought of Ruby Red as 'redder' - yours look more orange-ish/brick, but that's just my eye.

There should be a small paint code panel in the trunk, on the right (passenger) side near the hood shock. That will tell you definitively what the original paint code was. I note that your Fuchs are painted the same color - haven't seen that too often for non-commemorative cars.

You might PM Ed Hughes (efhughes3) - he also has a red '84 and might be able to help.

Enjoy!

Might wanna pick up a spare DME relay so you don't get stranded some where. I've got an extra but have never used, these Motronics 84-89 are the the most dependible. IMHO
