Upgrading headlights on the SC
Hey all:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/70476M44.htm?pn=70476-M44&bt=Y&fs=0&SVSVSI=793 I recently came across a post where someone mentioned upgrading the sealed beam (old school) with the Hella kit that our host offers. ... are there any of you out there that can testify or share their experience on the Hella kit? I would like to get a pair of H1 or H4s for this beast, but ... the idea of finding these parts, then working on them (or restoring them) is not real appealing to me given the cost of "entry". For reference, the 79SC targa I am rolling in .... I've left the sealed beam stuff there for the time being. Your input is appreciated! |
Round halogen h4 headlights (same as what's in a Jeep, not the Porsche h4) fit fine and drastically improve the lighting vs sealed beam for pretty cheap and super easy.
Did that on my 912e, I don't remember which brand of light I used. Not a kit, the new headlights plugged right in. |
The 7" H4 drop-in lights perform just as well as the big Porsche H4. Cheapest lighting improvement you can get. The only real reason to buy the Porsche H4 or H1 lights is for looks, assuming you prefer that look to the North American spec sugar scoops.

This.
And get/make a headlight relay kit (JWest or similar) to save your high beam switch and better power to the lights. Quote:

Never fear: I have the JWest headlight relay kit installed from about 4 years ago. ...when I nearly soiled myself when seeing the SMOKIN stalk that I encountered when I was trying to get the headlights to work in the very beginning. It was a really very easy safety measure to get this circuit more “safe”.
...looks like I will be scooping that up from the host when we’re ready to do so. |
I replaced my Sealed beams with those Hella E code drop in H-4 lights. Stock wattage bulbs. Vast improvement in the quality of the lighting. Great upgrade.
|
I also have those Hella headlights (and kept my chrome sugar scoops). +1 big improvement in lighting.
