how to remove the windshield...and...
more importantly, how to put it back. Easy or hard?
|
If your windshield is floppy like mine was, then you can literally just push it right out. Mine was just floating in there with no sealant and a old crappy gasket.
If your glass is glued in there, you gotta cut the seal like SoCal said so you don't booger-up the trim. Bent trim will undoubtedly give you some sweet wind noise when you're all done! This job was just talked about a few days ago. Good info. from Bob Hutson and others: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/105088-windshield-seal-without-groove.html Also, LeRoux provided a link to his experiences with dashboard replacement and you need to remove the glass to do the dash. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/100008-replaced-dashboard-pics.html Let's hope your windshield channel doesn't look like mine when you get the glass out: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/100757-paint-repair-recommendations.html |
Thanks guys.

I did this a couple of years ago. The Carreras DO NOT USE SEALANT!
If you do, it WILL SQUEAK! Ask me how I know. Pop the metal trim out. Now the glass and seal will pop-out IF the Previous Owner DID NOT USE SEALANT! If they did, you will need to clean it all OUT! BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE GLASS! As they get older, they get more brittle! When popping it out go VERY SLOWLY using as much surface on the glass when moving it. With it all out, you can reform the trim AROUND the BARE GLASS itself. This is a PERFECT TEMPLATE! Put on new seal on windshield, put on your now perfect trim ;) Place glass and seal resting on your PERFECTLY CLEAN and rust free, non- marked (if marked or scratched paint, REPAINT!) windshield frame. SAOP up some 3/16" NYLON (I tired twine the first time, it kept breaking) rope around the seal lip. SOAP up the LIP and the WINDSHIELD FRAME. Now you can use the NYLON rope to "PULL" the lip over the WINDSHIELD frame. VOILA' Perfect! The fun part, is if you have the integrated antenna like my '85. Moving the rope and lip around that. I have a word document with much more detail (somewhere in my computer). PM me if you want it. |
If by chance your window was replaced previously u might need to use this trick:
Find a 3-4 ft piece of paino wire or a thick, flexible subsitute. Feed the 1/2 the wire into the edge of the window (easier to go outside to inside) Get a friend to help you move the wire back and forth along the windows edge (all the way around). This is the best way to cut the sealer that is put around the window. - Good Luck |
Great info. Nick & Terry!
One thing I would recommend is that you only need to remove the bulk of the old sealant (as long as you don't need to do any painting). The old sealant residue will provide a suitable surface to bond with the new sealant. It may squeak when done with the sealant, but that's better than leaking. You have to seal the gasket to the glass and the gasket to the body. I'd also recommend using a moisture curing sealant (i'm going to use 3M High Visc. Urethane ) since you have to lube up the seal and channel in order to rope the gasket into the channel properly |
