Stupid Red Key Question

When I picked up my 71 a few years ago it didn't come with a red key. If I get a blank red key does it have to be specially cut by the dealer or can any key cutting place do it? I've searched and find conflicting answers and would appreciate someone who has actually had a red key made without a red key to start with tell what worked for them.

On my 84 Carrera, the black key can be used as the guide for a local key shop to cut a red key. The difference between the two is not the cut, but the longitudinal slots that are already in the blanks. I imagine your 911 is the same.

The red key is cut the same as the black key. It’s known as a valet key that won’t open the glove box lock. The lock is has one wafer that prevents the key from working.

Check out this from 914 world as the valet key doesn’t lock the rear trunk as well as the glove box

Thanks for the responses. All the other 1970's era Porsches I have owned cam with Red Keys but this is the first time I've had a car without one. Will order a blank and get it cut from one of my black keys.

Thanks for the 914 world thread. This makes sense as I have set the wafers (tumblers) for many BMW motorcycle locks and this appears to be a very similar process.
