Spoke to CA smog ref now need some help
 

So the smog ref was able to tell me that my '83 SC has an '84 3.2 motor in it whihc he said was fine but it is missing the catalytic converters. He said I could use any PC-1 3-way catalytic converter for OBD-1 but I need to know if I have DME or CDI ignition. Then he said to verify that my computer is the original model to the car and once that is all done I can make an appointment with the ref.

1. Which catalytic converter is the best and wont rob me of too much performance?

2. How do I know if I have DME or CDI ignition?

3. How do I tell if I have the original computer or not?

from what i see you have 3,2 Dme ignition system ..i do not know the blue electronics you have there on the A/C bracket ..somebody here will help you i`m sure..

I would just grab a stock catalytic converter and swap it out once you pass smog. There is a good chance that if you use anything but a stock cat, you might not pass visual.

So the ECU is under the drivers dash?

The DME is under the drivers seat, assuming it was put in the same location as a '84-89 3.2L. Just based on your pictures, it is still running Motronic. So it will have a DME, not a CDI.

Get this catalytic converter. This is the only aftermarket SMOG legal CAT for CA. Shop around for the best price.

I am surprised the smog ref said having the '84 engine in your '83 was 'ok'.

it could be possibly late 1983 911 Carrera and the tech does not have a clue?

64E is a 1984 US 3.2, should have engine designation 930/21

I bought an 17,000 orig mile 83 Cab which had a late build date. It had the ‘84 case from the factory as verified by the window sticker, the “good” COA and warranty book. I hope you get this figured out and pass. Another reason I’m ecstatic we moved out of CA 12 years ago. Good luck to the OP.

Whatever you do, you MUST absolutely get a cat with a genuine CARB serial # or it will automatically fail visual. Many aftermarket CA cats do NOT have this - they will pass the actual sniffer test but you will fail the visual part automatically.

Caveat emptor.

PS. You must also plug in the connector next to your DME or else the car will fail CA smog sniff no matter what you do. Unplug it once u pass smog because it makes the car run poorly.

From what I looked up, as long as the engine is newer than the car then it is ok in California.

Correct, and it has to have ALL the new smog stuff with the newer engine.

Besides the CAT, you might also need those valves on the oil tank hose. No biggie. The Motronic is a relatively simple emissions setup.

The blue box is a Jacobs Electronics Omni Pak ignition. I hear they are ok as long as they work but junk once something happens

Omg I had no idea this was CARB legal. Yesss!!

I think the solution could be WAY easier then you think. On the Motronic box, under the drivers seat there is a lose wire for CA emissions. Connect it (to ground I think) and it will likely pass (and be down several HP). Someone correct me if I am wrong.

The referee @ Cal State Fullerton in the automotive dept. is a knowledgeable group to work with.

I have a 76 912E with a 3.2 . Had to take it to the ref also here in Fresno. I put on a magna flow ca approved cat . I Wish I knew then that M&k made one . He verified that charcoal canister was still connected and oxygen sensor connected . I made sure that the counter light in the dash was active for the oxygen sensor . Took two trips , he needed time to research and then smogged it the second trip. You can put a newer motor in a car but not older , and has to have all equipment that came with that year. . Also , I connected the wires together next to the dme and removed my Steve Wong chip.
