Engine just wokeup, need checklist on what to replace
 

I got my engine running and took my porsche around the block. It's a 69 911T 2.0L.

What I replaced so far was:

Flushed fuel tank and replaced fuel
Changed oil
Coil

I think PO replaced air filter, and plug wires.

I'm an amature to working on cars so I feel this is all I can do, maybe I'll replace the spark plugs if he PO didn't because PO's are weird.

I also heard to adjust the valves every year, and this car sat for 10 years so I guess it could use that. It definetly needs a tune up because I "tried" to adjust the weber carburators, and probably messed that up more because the car backfires and has black smoke on the first couple seconds of startup, I'm guessing it's rich... what else should I look into replacing/adjusting? I don't want to have the valves adjusted, and miss something simple like oil change, which I messed up at first myself. I didn't know your suppose to check the oil level with the engine warm so I put in one too many quarts extra and had a smoke show. Does this effect compression because I had low compression. I'm going to check it again once I get everything done. The car is not registered or inspected yet but I want to get this done asap being a targa and summer's around the corner.

Ok Wayne, I just bought your book at Barns and Nobel. It looks like and excellent book, and I realy like the difficuilty rating for each project. My skill level is two talent guys. Anyways, it doesn't list what I should replace, it just says how to do everything. So far I have:

transmission fluid
oil
gas
tune carbs
adjust valves
replace oil filter
replace air filter
replace spark plugs
replace plug wires
What else?

Oh and I have a question about fuel. My 1969 owners manual says to use 96 octane, but does that even exist anymore? what kind of fuel should I use? I'm using 85 octane and I think that's the cause of the small poping/ping when the engine runs.

The 96 oct. rating is probably a RON rating. The pump gas in the states is CLC which averages RON and MON.

Just a guess but I think 96 RON might be about 90 CLC?

You should probably use premium to stay on the safe side.

The popping suggests fuel delivery/carburetors.
Low octane would give you give you pinging.
