WEVO G50 Review. 911 89 G-Model
I just finished fixing the Engine and transmission of my 89 G-Model. My goal was to build a street car, with a comfort ride.
I started with the ergonomics in the steering wheel by adding a hub extender . But the transmission - the stick and feeling was not the most desirable. Therefore I decided to test the Wevo. My first impression is not a cheap option, it is pricy. I like the improvements from the ergonomics perspective; by having the stick closer to the driver, you don't have to lean your body to shift gears. In particular when shifting from 4th into 5th. Shifting is a shorter distance and more comfortable. Explaining the concept of shorter, when shifting from 1st into 2nd - you just need to move the stick few inches to engage the gear. I don't like too much the stiffness, engaging a gear, it feels like a big old truck. There are hard and require an extra effort. In addition shifting from 3rd into 2nd, you might endup under the reverse and consequently you will miss angegin 2nd. You will need to adjust to get it right (in line with first gear and not under reverse ![]() This morning at the car show, other Porsche owners tested the transmission and they all agree that engaging a gear is very hard. Overall I like it, because the ergonomics in a car is not easy to improve it and the Wevo does it. The G50 from the factory require a lot of effort to engage a gear, it got more difficult - but still manageable. The problem of shifting from 3r into 2nd - it is part of getting use to a new manual car. Every car has a different feeling when operating the manual transmission. I hope my two cents help someone when reviewing options for their G50 ![]() |

I love mine...... Best thing I did for my 88 IMHO. Along with the PSJ and linkage. Also new mounts to the transmission and engine.
All of what I did transformed the car.

Hi AG81, I agree with you. Overall it helped. About your experience, is yours a stiff feeling or is it smooth?

Both..... there is no play compared to stock.....so stiff in that regard. The transition between gears is very smooth. Both up and down. No hunting for a gear like my worn out stock shifter.......

Still here

Not sure how that can happen given there's no gear "under reverse". 3rd to 2nd should be a slam dunk so to speak.

After several years of driving the car, the Wevo was the best thing. I was having some issues at the beginning, I took it to a professional shop they adjusted and it has been a fantastic experience.

I have stock in my early '87, JWest V2 in my late '87 and WEVO in my '89.
I have a slight preference for the JWest V2 as it A) fits under the stock shift boot better and, 2) more to the OP's goal, the lever is height adjustable for improved reach. So, it's a short shifter that can have a shorter / same / longer lever height than stock... It's baaack (2023)... JWest RennShift for '87-'89 G50 911 I like the WEVO too, but in my '89 the unit is exposed (no shift boot or center console to interfere with) and the bare mechanism looks cooler than the stock or JWest units.
