Removing tie rods from rack

I removed the steering rack from my 83sc with the tie rods. I tried using a spanner wrench on the lock but it it not budging. Before I apply more force it dawned on me I should confirm which direction I should be turning to loosen the lock nut. Should it be turned to the left or right in this picture?

No magic or bastard threads, just on tight. Lefty loosey. Use the tierod as the wrench to get it to turn. It will not break free rather take several turns until it is loose.

I had success using a hammer and a steel punch counter-clockwise in the notches on the locknut

Thanks. Just a little more force with the spanner wrench broke them loose.
