SC head/cam box removal

I need to remove the #5 head on my 83 911. Can it be removed along with the cam box by lowering the engine down or do I have to completely take the engine out of the car. Thanks

I would drop the engine for this. I know you can pull / change cams with the engine in, but that's about as far as I would go. Even if it is possible physically to get to the cylinder, it will be very cumbersome and more time consuming than doing it on your engine stand + the time to R&R the engine. I would also worry about reassembly. You are looking at using a ring compressor, sealer, cam timing etc. etc.

My advice to any serious DIY 911 owner is to learn how to drop the engine quickly and efficiently. It will need to get done every few years. Usually a great opportunity to re-seal any oil leaks on top of what needs to get done!

I don't know why you would want to. You have to remove so much stuff before you can even get to the heads, it would be so much easier to do all that while standing next to the engine on the stand versus laying under the car or hunched over the engine compartment. Not to mention the inconvenience of putting it all back together that way, including timing the camshaft.

Compared to all that effort, the time spent to drop the engine and place it on a stand is nothing.
