911SC Antenna Question

Hi -

Unfortunately, my antenna on my 83 SC snapped off in a storm last week and I need to replace it (radio works! just don't want the broken nub on the hood). I believe it was a fixed antenna since it never went up/down as long as I've owned the car, but it's located on the passenger side of my SC which I believe indicated it might have originally installed as a power antenna. I've attached pictures as I was trying to figure out where to access it to replace it and it appears I can get it from the wheel well (second photo attached). Given the pictures, I think it was fixed give this view from the well with just tubing/wire.

Any advice here? Ideally I'd install an automatic (I have an updated Alpine head-end unit which should facilitate up / down with power), but not sure where to access. At worst, I'll just replace it with another fixed mast, but is it difficult to replace relay?

Thanks,

Andrew

Real easy to install. Most modern radios have labeled wires like “antenna power”. If not find one not connected to anything and test with a voltmeter to see if it excites when you turn on the radio.

Thanks - is there room in the wheel well for the electronic component for the automatic antenna (or is that where it belongs)? Is the best way to install to take tire/wheel off?

Yep there’s plenty of room. It’s definitely easier to take the wheel off.

Yup, remove the wheel for easier access and be sure to use an additional bracket inside the wheel well for stability.

Just to share options, you could replace it with a manual antenna as well.

I may have the correct power antenna for your car. I purchased the wrong one when trying to find the correct antenna for my car.
I learned that the mounting position changed from either year to year or Turbo to SC. Either way the shape of the fender mount and mounting brackets are all different.
