SC Alternator

I’m upgrading my alternator while I have the fan and fan housing out for cleaning. I believe this guy will work, correct?

The service bulletin also mentions a bigger nut, is this different than the nut pictured on the alternator?

fwiw - Pelican doesn't seem to allow links to competitor's websites. can't really blame them, i suppose.

I did the emergency installation some years ago. The shaft on the new alternator was a different diameter which comes with a new nut. It is 24 mm instead of 22 as I recall. The tool in your kit will not fit that nut. I have a dedicated socket for that now. Also, because the shaft is larger diameter, the pulley halves must be enlarged to slide onto the shaft. I used a round file to do that. Your garage shows a 79 SC so I think my experience is relevant. I forget when the SC changed to the different alternator style with the internal voltage regulator. If you have the old engine compartment mounted voltage regulator, the black wire in the alternator harness is not used, nor is the external VR.

Awesome. I was wondering if I need different washers and such. I’ll see how far i get reusing the old stuff. I had the old style and would be putting in an alt with internal VR. The new part number is 91160312004. Sounds like I’ll have to modify the air duct on the back of the alt too.

a remanufactured bosch? do you have a need for a higher output alternator? A fair #/% of folks have had issues with some of these remanufactures (poor bearings/incomplete rebuilds/premature failures) and the consensus these days seems to be that one's better off finding a local shop that can assess and rebuild your existing alternator for you.

Yes, I was looking at a rebuilt Bosch

I recommend you find a local rebuilder right in your town. I had a local shop rebuild mine years ago and they use top quality bearings, and "do it right" and not try to squeeze every penny. And it is someone that has pride in doing it right.

Cool. Thanks guys. I’ll look into that

Thread bump. I'm looking for an internal VR unit as I'm rewiring the motor harness. Hence the reason for looking at the Boschs. The '79s have an external VR

In this case, seems like its a better option to bite the bullet and buy the Valeo that's new, not refurb'd
