1989 / 911 Washer System Explained

Hey everyone...
Sorry for sounding obtuse but I am trying to figure out how the Washer System lays out on my '89/911 so I can track a potential clogging issue - pump seems to be working.

Specifically how/where the different reservoirs (I guess there are two - one behind the battery and another in a wheel well) dispense the cleaning solution.

Can anyone point me to a diagram or schematic.

Thanks - Richard

Hi Richard,

Open this pdf file. Go to pdf file page number 426 0f 474. There are three diagrams of washer systems with associated part numbers. This should give you some insight.

Thanks Bob... very helpful.
I jumped over page 428 and it was exactly my system.

I assume the second line going in is from the Intensive Cleaning reservoir - will check it all out tomorrow.

cheers,
Richard

If looking at page 428, the "second line" is kind of a ghost line that probably originates from the standard washer system reservoir. The standard system tank is in the front (drivers) wheel well. 428 shows the intensive window washer system which displays the plumbing for both standard and high intensity systems - just not the standard reservoir. You have to do something different (push the stalk vs. pull? - don't know) to kick in the high intensity motor vs the standard motor.

Page 426 shows the standard system as it is similar to my 81.

I've unclogged my system recently. I found it was one of the valves in front of the nozzles. very easy to do , and cheap. they are also not hard to reach. I'd suggest you start there.

EDIT:
Back at it...
Isolated the problem to the pump/reservoir - tried the pump and it sounds okay - pulled the hose to the washer and it's not obstructed.

Looking at the pump that is located in front of the battery there are two hoses attached to it.
I assume Hose #1 brings fluid from the reservoir.
Hose #2 leads to the washers and has a Tee fitting with a hose (call it #3) that I assume leads to the reservoir... OR?
I pulled the hoses off the Tee and when I activate the wiper stalk there is a small spit of fluid.

QUESTION:
Can anyone confirm what hose #3 does?
Thx

Sorry I cannot answer any questions here, but thought you might be able to expand on how this system works because there is nothing I find in the Bentley manual or the owner's manual on the intensive system.

There seem to be two switches related to washers:
  1. Wiper stalk. When pulled towards driver it should run wipers for a few swipes (mine does) and spray the windscreen at the same time (mine does not).
  2. Momentary rocker switch on dash While it is depressed it should trigger intensive wash. Mine sprays headlights if the headlights are turned on. Should it also spray the windscreen?

There are two reservoirs for washer fluid, one for intensive wash visible upper left rear of luggage compartment and one for the 'other' washer hidden in the left front behind the fender liner(?) and filled from the small opening by the fuel filler. Easy to see whether the intensive washer reservoir has fluid. Any way to see if the other reservoir does?
