71' 911T Wiper motor wiring anomaly

Hey everyone.

It seems every time I go to work on something I hit a bump.

Today is the wiper motor wiring. This thread was extremely helpful in my efforts, it is old and I bumped it, but I may need my own thread. wiper motor wires

I followed Gearbox's wiring explanation even though I do not have a red wire coming off of my sensor under the dash speaker grill. Its black and its not going to anything.

SO I left that unplugged and also do not have a red wire connected to the wiper motor. However my motor works, all 3 settings work as expected. See photo. What am I missing?

BTW I measured the black wire to have 12V when the car is on, even when the wiper is off.

Rarely someone will post a thread with a question as to why something is working, but here we are.

It's hard to tell from your picture but it looks like you have these 2 silver boxes next to the wiper assembly.

If so, you have the 1 year only wiper setup. Actually I believe all of 70 and also early 71 cars. I have this setup in my 70E and also my 71T. If yours is like that, you need to follow the wiring diagram for the 70 model year. Those 2 relays and the wiper motor assembly are unique.

If you do have those 2 relays is your wiper motor original to the car?

I do have those relays and I believe the motor is original. I did look at the SL-35 wiring diagram which is for the 70' however I cannot find the small sensor in my photo with the black wire in the diagram. Also the SL-35 shows a red wire going to the 9'oclock spade connector in my photo, and I don't have an available red wire. =)

I see someone in that thread used a black wire for 53a which is what I have. However, my wipers are working correctly in all 3 positions with nothing on 53a. Is there a way to control the intermittent pause? maybe that is what 53a is for and I did not fully test the functionality. Hmm i wonder if the PO bypassed the relays now that I think about it.
I need to research more. Stay tuned.

I re-read the post in the thread referenced about the relay bypass and i do not think that is what I have.
So back to the black wire to 53a which has 12v with key on as mentioned and the wipers are working, I am worried I will cause a short. So not sure what to do.

I took the clock out of my 71 and yes, the black wire coming off the capacitor goes to that open terminal on your wiper motor.
