Source for SC oil sump screen update?
 

I am liiking for the updated oil screen to prevent cavitation and poor oil scavenging in my 78 SC. It has the original "tophat" screen. The part is listed as NLA and I have tried Stoddards/Foreign intrigue and several dismantlers. Anybody know where I might finsd this part PN #930.107.314.00)
Is my baby the only 78 SC still left out there that didn't get updated?

I wouldn't bother. I got one from Porsche for my '79 a few years ago, and it broke, which caused some hair-raising excursions of oil temp and pressure. I went back to the original, plain basket strainer, and I've been happy ever since.

Sounds bad! But I have had serious overheating pronblems at DE events..even with a bunch of cooling modifications. Porsche apparently highly recommended this new sump screen to prevent some scavenger pump pickup probs which apparently lead to overheating with what I think they described as "spirited" driving.

bump..anybody with an idea or suggestion?

I know of several people who have used the original basket type strainer in DE cars without trouble. Perhaps, you should look to other causes of overheating, e.g., dirty engine oil cooler, crimped lines, or defective thermostats. I'm assuming that you've upgraded the front cooler to a Carrera, or similar. A friend of mine with a '78 SC has this cooler, and he gets good cooling by means of holes in his headlight bucket. (He takes out the right headlight for DE events.) Kind of rough, but it does work. From what I've heard, the valance mounted front coolers are the true fix.

The best thing to do about the pickup is to put in a new oil pump, with the fixed strainer/pickup. But, of course, this means a complete engine teardown.

When I got my 78 SC it was not up graded. I had a very hard time finding one. I was told to check with engine builders for a used one but could not find one. I then e-mailed every parts places and was able to find a new one at a place in Maine. This was about 2 years ago.
Who knows maybe I got the last one but I doubt it.

Tom, yes I have a carrera type fender mount, went with the fender mount cooler scoop. It replaces the R side marker light and directs air back to the cooler.
STLL gets warm.

Any new ideas..I think I have called every dismantler..and lots of part shops...any ideas really appreciated.

I did eventually find the updated piece..Otto (of Venice) found one while cleaning out shelves!
The mod REALLYhelped keep my 78 SC running cooler..I kept the original but would NEVER go back to it.

Question for you. I have a 76 911S and it has the dome shaped strainer with a hole for the oil pickup tube to fit through. The strainer has a flange with holes that fits over the case studs and then the plate bolts on top of that. Is the update the same shape but with metal covering the top portion and the strainer mesh around the lower portion of the dome? Is the replacement just a swap out of the old one? I read some threads on this but never really got a good answer.

Jesse, if I recall correctly the updated screen is as you described with metal covering portions (I believe I read this was to preventcavitation due to sloshing with "spirited" driving. I believe the shape is slightly different. I can check the original screen this weekend if you need details, but the original was all screen..no metal on the top or sides.
