To much oil?

So I have a stock 3.0 air cooled. I put 10 quarts in it. Dipstick is within lines. But the oil gauge is showing high. Anyone ever have that

It's all sitting in tank, run it to operating temp and check again.

There's also a ground(?) wire in the right rear wheel-well. When my gauge shot up to the top, i removed the wire, cleaned all connections and that took care of the pegged gauge.

Is the motor/oil hot or cold? Should be measured hot. If still in doubt, I would trust the dipstick over the gauge.

my gauge shows high when idling at operating temp and full (and otherwise shows empty or bouncing around) -- anything below full on the gauge in this specific situation (idling after stopped on level ground when warmed up) is cause for me to check oil level at dipstick -- normal operation

Fully hot operating temp. Haven’t driven it just running in the garage. The gauge was much higher then usual. I know this motors take 10 -10 1/2 quarts.

Then I probably wouldn't worry, Flat 6. And if you've overfilled, just wait a few days/weeks, and let the extra seep out from one of your oil leaks.

10qt with a filter is the normal fill to keep the level a tad low, on the safe side.
Early cars 9qt and 72s 8qt.

Flat six...do as suggested.Your 10Q is just fine for your 911.But fix the problem.
additional advice is always check oil level with the dipstick.
To fix the gauge..start with the checking the connection on your oil level sending unit.
My advice would be to change the sending unit cork gasket. They go thinner by the age and this way the unit itself is grounded and gives you the wrong reading.
Once you get the cork gasket it goes on only one way. Also you can drain the oil tank again but it is enough to lift the car on that side and the oil will not leak out.
here is the cork gasket placement ...
