Intro/Carrera 3.0

I picked up a 911 about six months ago after a decade of beat up old camry driving. I started with old VWs in high school and eventually got a 964 in college but traded it for an airplane and haven't had a German car since. A 911 was always on the back of my mind but life got in the way. Ten years after trading my 964 I found myself on a ship with pretty crappy internet. BAT was one of the few websites I could access (I have no idea why BAT, of all websites, worked) and, against my better judgment, bought a car on the internet sight unseen from the other side of the world.

My new 911 made it to my house with only minimal fiasco between my wife and some Russian delivery drivers that resulted in a slightly messed up door. Luckily for me the car was as advertised and did not deviate from the seller's description. I came home to a non-sunroof original paint '76 Carrera 3.0. It did/does have issues but I bought the car fully aware that it needed restoration.

Over the last few months I've been gathering parts before tearing into my new car. All of the Euro parts were swapped when the car was imported in 2001. This website has been an excellent resource and I've found NOS metal to replace all the rusty bits, a correct and properly dated 300kph speedo, and even the correct 15x7&8 Fuchs that happen to all be date matched to my spare (they are currently with Harvey Weidman).

I began working on the car last weekend. I plan to sort out the rust starting with the front and working my way back. I pulled the fenders and the situation is not as bad as I expected. It will require a couple of patches along the top where the fenders mates to the body and some work with the bumper mounts but nothing too bad. I do think the windshield scuttle/cowl needs replacement but that doesn't look too bad. Need to source an original piece for this as I'd like to avoid aftermarket panels. I need to find the correct fenders as well as the ones I bought do not match the ones that came off.

I've got a couple of questions that I hope one of you can help me with:

1) Do Euro front signals have the connectors for side markers? I think the correct part number for Euro front signals is 91163141700 but I'd like confirmation from someone who knows. Are new front signals Bosch or some other brand?

2) Is there any difference other than the black paint between pre 83 heater control boxes and the earlier red ones?

3) My car came with AC but I am taking it out. Can someone with a car that did not come with AC reply with pictures of the following areas?

Mine doesn't have the side marker connectors. It's a later car so that might make a difference, but I'd guess not.

As for Bosch or not, I can't say for the light bucket, but my original lenses are Bosch. I got some new Porsche branded lenses last year but they weren't marked Bosch. If originality is important to you, keep your old ones and restore them or try to find some NOS or fantastic condition used.

Welcome to the family. For what it’s worth I have 6 carrera 3.0s and had a 7th and zero of them have the side markers.

“Keep your old ones and restore them or try to find some NOS or fantastic condition used.“

I agree with this. Even the newer Bosch H4 assemblies are out of the Czech Republic and are reportedly lesser quality, not to mention their other offerings out of Brazil, etc. That said, with these easily installed items you can always use what you find readily available while you source or restore your desired units.

Explaining why you have multiples of similar parts to others living at the house is on you.

Seeing that the C3s were never officially imported to the US, they wouldn't have them unless added after manufacture; side markers (not to be confused with fender mounted side repeaters) were/are a North America thing.

To clarify I am referring to the fender mounted side markers. None of my cars have those

They didn't start being used until the late 70s, possibly even 1980 or 81.

To clarify further, you are referring to the one on the upper rear fender, on this pic, behind my front wheel, yes? Those are the ones to which I referred above.

And to avoid additional confusion, they're only illuminated in this shot because my hazards were on and I caught the photo when they flashed.

A picture probably would have helped:

I am referring to the side markers in the bumper that should have the rubber block offs. I am specifically wondering if the Euro turn signals have the two spade connectors to hook the side markers up and they're just not used or, if the connectors are not there at all. When my car was imported they swapped the impact tubes, speedo, taillight lenses, headlights, and added the bumper side markers
I'm trying to figure out if they used the original front signals when they did this or if they swapped some US spec signals in.

Nice car and project
I also have a '76 C3

The fenders are the same from '74 -89 except for some brackets and side markers on the later RoW cars and Thyssen steel. '76 would not have the side markers.

what I see as off on yours are the headlights and the front turn signals

here's a pic of a stock C3 front end
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1589746192.jpg

The right side mirror was also an option which yours appears to lack

the non AC cars would not have that big hole in the bulkhead between the smugglers box and the passenger compartment

side markers

I have the side markers at the back of the front fenders on both cars.

Otter74 05-17-2020 03:05 PM

Weren't the fender-mounted repeaters something that didn't appear until around 1983?

The fender mounted side lights were introduced for MY 1981 SC, RoW only

utnick 05-17-2020 03:25 PM

Thanks Bill. I thought the fenders were the same but the pair I picked up have different buckets with an extra bump and the aft edge where they mate to the body is slightly different.
The red one is my original fender and the red one with white overspray is what I picked up to replace mine.

I'll post them in the classifieds to try and trade for a set like mine. These are pretty nice and I dont want to cut them up.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1589757690.jpg

that light bucket looks to be modified

Not sure that I see a difference in the fenders. I do know for a fact that all the fenders from '74 -89 are interchangeable

You have to be very careful if purchasing used or aftermarket parts,

Yeah thanks for the clarification. Several people have told me that my cars should have them and I didn’t think so.

utnick 05-17-2020 09:44 PM

Bill, the bumps on the buckets are symmetrical on both sides. It appears that they were made that way. Construction and welds are the same as what came off my car.
I found another set online that also have the bump.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1589780519.jpg

Plan to swap the buckets if I cant find a good set that match my rusty ones.

Bill Douglas 05-17-2020 11:58 PM

Nick, if I remember correctly, Restoration Design sell just the buckets. Either them or Stoddard.
