How do I remove the retaining clip holding the break line?

It looks like to remove the calipers I have to disconnect the brake lines at the retaining clip. If this is the case I would need to bleed the brakes right? According to the 101 projects book it doesn't seem like this should be the case.
It looks to me as if the retainer is welded to the shock and the soft line and the hard line are connected to each other through a hole at that point.
What is the trick?

Thanks

The way "I" do it....hit it with some lubricant and grab the top of it with needle nosed pliers or vise grips....yank up, DO not bang hand when it releases suddenly.

it pulls up? ahhhhhhhhh... I couldn't see under there :)
Thank you Mike!

Some years are removeable some are not. Mine can't be done without opening the brakes.

Mike Kast 04-12-2003 09:33 AM

I don't think mine can either. There is no slot underneath the clip. It swivels on the axis a little bit, but not enough to matter. I have a 79. So is the verdict that I have to bleed the breaks? Its not a problem. I just bought 2 cans of break fluid with my pads and bearings.
Is there any other little tricks I should know? I wish my computer was in the garage!

Mine's an 83....it has a clip that has notch in it.....

Mike Kast 04-12-2003 10:04 AM

no notch on the 79. Hell! I'm gonna take my top off and go for a ride!
I can work on it when it isn't so beautiful outside...

This is what it looks like....http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/springclip.jpg

I took a picture of mine too but I can't get it to upload now. Must be my conection speed. I am just a caveman with dialup and a 79 911.
Mike, You didn't take your wheel off to get to the clip for the picture did you? lol...
You are a motivated man!
Hey? how do I become a scwdp grunt anyway? Do I have to sabatoge a carrerror?

Joe Bob 04-12-2003 10:36 AM

You can become an honorary member by asserting that you should have bought an SC....and will do so, next time.....

That pic was from a spare I had lying around. It might not be off of a Porsche, but maybe the Chevy. But that what they should look like, or close.

Definitely not a VW/Mercedes/Porsche Ate clip ...

Those flat clips do come off easily, but the upper pic is not the 'quick release' variety! Line must be disassembled to get the 'U' type retainer loose from the bracket/tab ...

OK... so I have resolved that problem... Next issue in another post. I removed the caliper and the brake fluid has escaped...

just for the archives...

my 1970 911E has a fixed clip and to remove the caliper I had to disconnect the hard line from the rubber line at the strut before I could remove the front calipers

My 85 has the spilt clip....on some cars it's located so it pulls "out"..some "up"...I guess it depends how it's installed.
BTW...I found the same set up on my friend's 71 914....why would intervening years for 911's be different?

My 79 is split in the back and solid in the front... I guess it was a gradual process of evolution...lol
