3rd brake light

I want to remove the high-mounted inside brake light on my ?88 Carrera - the thing just totally blocks my rearward vision. I pulled the screws and removed the unit, figuring I?d just pry the base off the glass and clean up any adhesive residue. But there is an additional black area between the base and the glass, which appears to be there to hide the adhesive from being visible from the outside. Does anyone know how to get it off? Is it painted or is it more like a decal material?I was going to try to remove it with a razor blade but the defroster wires run underneath it.

If I can get this off I may try to reinstall it at the base of the window.

Better put it back where it was. The tailgating soccer mom in her SUV will not see it down low. I added one to my 83 just for her.

Thanks for the advice. Nevertheless, I'd like to remove / move it. Anyone know what the black stuff is?

Sorry to bring up a very old post, but did you have any success with this?

No, not al all. The car is gone, but I remember that as a really tenacious material, there were defroster wires very close to it, and it was pretty difficult to get to. I put the project off thinking I'd attack it if the rear window was ever out and access was better.

Thanks. And you're right, it does look pretty difficult.
