Help with worn key

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my 1974 911 key, its pretty worn and it shows signs of wanting to brake off which of course will happen in the worst moment possible, so trying to avoid it I would like to have another key made but my issue is how to cut the new one if the old one is so worn, is there a way to get the key cut as the original?

Best regards and thanks in advance

I got one cut from the VIN at an old-school locksmith. Then he made duplicates from that new code-cut master key.

Thanks for the tip, what year is your car, do you think that would work for a 74?

Yes, I did much the same with the VIN. The Porsche center in town made me one for my 1979 SC.

Porsche Crest

Like Bill said, my local Porsche dealer cut me a spare key for my '84 911. I got the 10% PCA discount and the new key "fit like a glove".

I suggest taking your key to an old-school locksmith and have them cut your key - take your car, or at least take the glove box lock to check fit and function. Good locksmiths can also use your VIN along with valid registration to cut a key as well, and they charge alot less than a dealer. If you decide to have a dealer cut your key, call them first as many don't/can't do this. No dealers would do this in my area - one thought that "maybe" they could for $140.

I had my old-school locksmith do mine for $15 using blanks I bought from Pelican. I have a 1981 SC which has similar keys and cuts as your 74. I say "old-school" because I did have another guy cut keys earlier and they didn't work and wasted a blank. Finding a good locksmith isn't as easy as it seems.

You might want to start by taking the key to a local, old school, locksmith and having a new key carefully hand cut a new one from your current key's profile. If your key still allows the lock to turn when inserted, it should still be a good guide for the locksmith. Avoid big box stores or other places that use automated key cutters.

[edit -- oops, apparently failed to refresh this thread before posting . . . what aoncurly said!]
