10W60 Synthetic Oil?
Hey guys,
I’m in the process of finalising the TT conversion on my ‘89 3.2/3.3 Carrera motor, and I’m considering using 10W60 synthetic motor oil. Is this the recommended oil for our earlier air cooled motors? Car is purely street. No track use. |

1982 SC engine. I've been running 15W-60 synthetic for years now. The car loves me for it LOL

Placebo effect maybe, but it does feel smoother.

Please not again an oil thread...there were millions over the decades ...

Yes Sir!
But we haven't discussed specifically 10W-60 synthetic. |

Please, please make the effort yourself and have a closer look in both threads I referred to....there are plenty of contributions about pro's and con's of synthetic oils...

If there is anything in the threads about 15W-60 synthetic it's probably me anyway. |

Anyway, I’m thinking a 10W60 oil will be a good choice for these earlier air cooled turbo motors. I’m using hybrid K16 journal bearing turbos. |

Still here

First order of business is to ensure there's good oil when and where it is needed.

Dunno about the 10W-60.
But this is what Penrite says about their 15W60. HPR 15 is a premium, full synthetic SAE 15W-60 engine oil. It features a DOUBLE LAYER of engine wear protection with FULL ZINC and Penrites advanced EXTRA TEN technology. It uses a combination of advanced additive technology and a low shear rate viscosity modifier, to ensure additional protection against wear, corrosion, oil oxidation, piston deposits and sludge under tough conditions. |

What shall this unprecise marketing chatter of "full zinc" mean?? I want to see numbers in ppm.

Do we think or know that ZDDP can be replaced by a more modern protection, which might explain the absence of an amount. Equally, more modern engines might not need as much wear protection as ours. As usual, lots of opinion and interpretation of fact on this subject. Surely it’s possible for a modern synthetic to protect at least as well as a high ZDDP mineral oil and possibly to perform better in some areas. Which maybe why Porsche has gently moved the goal posts to offer 10w 60 for our engines. I would really love to be certain on this as there are plenty of sensible people supporting each view.
