Rust Removal on Chrome 1966 Rims

I just bought an early painted dash 1965 912 (I am here because more folks are looking in than the 912 forum) and it came with Lemmertz chrome finished steel wheels.

Unfortunately the outer parts of the rims have rust clusters but the center discs and emblems are fine.

Has anyone used coke-aluminum foil or the Lime Away product on rusty chrome wheels?

I am considering trying that vs sand blasting them and painting them with primer and Duplicolor DAL1679 Silver Acrylic Lacquer.

i am not up to spend big money on re-chroming them as I have lots to do with the restoration of the rest of the car.

Don’t use duplicolor on your car stuff is crap and your wheels will look like crap spray painted. Try some fine steel wool followed by buffing compound won’t be perfect but will look acceptable if your careful.

I dunno, a close friend did his wheels that way and this is the result. Nevertheless I’ll try the steel wool and rubbing compound first.
Thanks

I polished up my motorcycle pipes with water and aluminum foil. It doesn't make them new but it sure does look better. The pic shows one before and one after. Took about 15-20 minutes for each pipe. If it doesn't work, the only investment is a couple minutes of your time. It doesn't do any harm to the part.

Is polishing with aluminum foil and water as simple as it sounds? Tell us more.

I used aluminum foil and Diet Coke, and then fine grade wool and industrial lime and rust removal and then polished.

Looks great but not perfect.

Maybe rechrome later...

Yea, it's simple. I had googled how to polish rusty chrome. Using coke might be better or easier but I don't drink soda so I didn't have any on hand when I tried it. It won't work where the chrome has rusted completely away but it's been over a year and my motorcycle pipes look almost the same as when I first polished them.

I have used aluminum foil on rust it knocks the rust off and doesn’t damage the chrome. Not sure about the other added liquids make sure you wax after.

So, is the aluminum foil used as an abrasive? Happich Simichrome Polish is a great product to use.

Yes it’s actually removes the rust with help of Diet Coke.(Regular Coke is sticky) I also used fine steel wool and lime-rust removal liquid from the locsl Dollar General after that, then I polished it.
