Exhaust valve cover
Hi guys. Newbie question here. I am in the process of adjusting the valves on my 1988 3.2 Carerra. What is the best way to get at the driver side exhaust cover? It is a pretty tight fit with a heat shield and the muffler adjacent. I can get my socket in there but do folks typically remove the muffler and shield for better access or just live with the bloody knuckles?
Thanks, Ruxin

Remove the tin from the cat, you’ll get more room

I just did it both ways- worth taking the extra 10 minutes to R&R the catalytic converter, especially if you’re new at adjusting valves on these engines.
If the cat hasn’t been off in a while buy some extra bolts, and some anti-seize. You’ll also need gaskets.

Good luck getting the Cat off. I had to cut most of the bolts off. About killed my Dremel. You will have to remove the O2 sensor also (no big deal). I would try to do it with the cat installed but heat shield off. Ideally if you take the cat off replace it with a bypass pipe and never have to worry about it again. Gain a couple horses in the process.
I do valve adjustments ever other year at least. real easy when you dont have to take all that stuff off. Chris 89 Carrera |
