1968 912 clock question... what keeps it in place?
 

Finishing up the restoration of a 1968 912 here at our shop. I was not involved in the teardown of the car and was only slightly familiar with the platform prior to being assigned the re-assembly tasks. I have always been a fan of the 911 and 912 and wish I had gotten into the game when I could have afforded to get one into my own garage. My background is aircooled VW focused so much of it is familiar and a lot of my knowledge carries over. I am mechanically inclined and pretty proficient at using the search button also. All of that said, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the damned clock to mount into the dash. All of the other gauges in the dash use the standard VW/Porsche knurled knobs and brackets that I am used to. This one however, has no mounting screws or nuts to speak of. It is a VDO clock with the numbers 214/13/1 stamped into the back along with +12V near the power blade and 4.73 (april 73 maybe?) stamped near the top light bulb port. There is a small paper tag below the power blade with the numbers 3130 printed on it. I assumed that it might use a later bellows style rubber ring but can't seem to find reference to it nor a part number for the mounting attachment in all of my searching. At this point I'm stumped and looking for some guidance.

It's the wrong clock. You need an early clock with the mounting studs. In 70 Porsche got rid of the mounting studs and knurled nuts and used a thick rubber ring to press fit the gauges into the dash.

Thought I was going crazy. The PET shows the stud and bracket style for 68. I guess I just overlooked the date on the clock and honestly thought the rubber bellows style ring mount started much later. It never occurred to me to look at the later PET to see how the gauges mounted. Now that I realized the clock is later I have found the correct mount. This will work for now and I will start hunting for the correct gauge for the owner.
