2.7 running hot in a 914-6 help

We are getting higher then we like temps out a 2.7 with carbs in a 914-6 conversion.. We installed an external cooler and that has delayed the temps rising but eventually they still reach about 250.. How much does timing or carb tuning effect operational temps? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Sounds like the carbs are running lean. What is your compression ratio?

hot 2.7

A little more info on the engine build would help. What is the size of the oil lines to the cooler and a picture of the cooler would help.Double grill engine lid always helped and good sealing between engine and body.Too lean a mixture makes heat as well.If it has your headers I know it breathes well.Fred

It has stock heat exchangers. No idea on the engine build other then it dyno'd at 187hp. Running a setrab cooler by the transaxle and everything is -12 which is a little smaller then I like but previously with stock 914-6 oil lines it didn't change anything in fact it was a bit worse.. It does have the double GT lid on it..

I felt as though it was running a bit rich but Harpo it could be a bit lean..

I thought rich = cool and lean = hot but I'm no expert. You need a sniffer on your tail pipe to know for sure

Yes your right.. Apply it to a turbo and you fuel it to keep it cool

Sorry but have you verified your hot temp via a secondary gauge? My 914 has a hot Jake Raby engine and on it maiden voyage the temp spiked and I ended up parking it until the evening. The sender was bad not the actual temp.

I would try advancing the timing- get to pinging under load then back off a bit. Easy to return to where you started.

Oil cooler in airflow and better yet, with a fan you can turn on with a switch. Larger crank pulley, like from an SC and smaller fan pulley flows more air. Richer as noted. What do the plugs look like? Less total advance within reason.

Plugs are a little rich but thats from idle.. I am thinking a fan on the cooler would be the biggest help.. It runs really well besides the heat..

Turns out the noise insulation was the culprit.. Took that out and no issues.. Runs 210.
