Combo fiberglass / metal RS rear bumper?

Has anyone ever successfully tried to add the metal bumper guards and mounting structure to a one piece Carrera RS fiberglass rear bumper? The all metal rear bumper halves with the flares are insanely expensive (for me at least), and I like the weight savings of the fiberglass. I do wish I had at least a little bit of protection back there though.

I was thinking that if I could find a pair of used rear bumper halves there might be a way to take the mounting structure, merge it with the fiberglass one piece, and then add the chrome bumper guards. Anyone done it?

I’ve got stock metal bumper sides from my 72 that I’m not going to use.
