air escaping? hissing sound
Just another post to try and figure out this new to me 911:
After driving, I'll lift up the engine hood (with engine off) and when I lift the hood to the max hight I hear a hissing sound coming from the back of the top left of the compartment. I can't trace it but is seems as thought the hood bracket might be pinching something. If I lower the hood a bit, it stops. There's a hose (about 1'' thick) that runs from that area and fastens under the lid but I'm not sure what it's for (I don't have a rear wiper/washer - atleast I don't think so). I just got the car back from a mechanic who swapped the tranny, replaced the clutch and shifter, tuned it up and replaced an oil return line. The hissing problem was present before this and is still pressent now (after r/r of the engine). Any ideas? Tomorrow I'm going to replace the front and back hood shocks so I figure it's a good time to find this hissing. Also, I'm replacing the driver's door stay (without the reinforcement kit). Any tips you can give me for these two tasks (besides what I've read in Wayne's "101 Projects..." book)? One last thing: Any good resources for finding a used copy of a Bently manual (in the interest of saving a buck)? Thanks much, Dylan ('84 Carrera Coupe) |

I know someone must know the answer to this - come on, give it a guess.
Thanks, Dylan

Wow just reread my post, i am tired and cant spell worth a crap, anyway does it run to something that looks like a ball or a bottom of a egg crate? it could be going to a vacum reserve? Really i think we could figure it out with a picture, by the way is it the type hose that has the material look to it? they often ozone and go bad, Kevin

Is there any hose besides one leading to the a/c condesor that would have pressurized air?

the issue is the location, correct.. if you can hear it from standing at the rear, then a small hose does help pin pointing the unknown leak.. I could recommend a $100 vacuum & leak detector gizmo, but it doesn't sound like it's needed in this case.. if your replacing the engine lid shock because it doesn't hold up the lid, the shock seal is blown and leaking...... really my guess would be a vacuum reserve or, am unsure how the washer bottle gets its pressure, regardless you probaly need to fix it vacuum leaks cause all types of idle problems, Kevin

Kevin - the hose I think it is coming from (i.e. the only one I see running next to the hood hinge) is about 1 inch thick and is the common garden variety of the regular black rubber material. I'f I can't figure it out tomorrow I'll post a pic - thanks. AND, please don't worry about your spelling or else I'll have to worry about mine.

I haven't been able to figure out if my air works - the fan does but I've never let it run long enough to know for sure if it gets cold. I bet you figured it out, though, because looking at past records from previous owner (I've only had this car for about a week) I've seen a number of work orders for re-charging the air.
If this hose (to a/c condensor) does have a leak, is it something I can just pull off and replace myself?

Not really because you will have to evacuate the system, then recharge, and we all know that getting freon is harder then hell, do a search and Try Jack O's post on a/c, he seems to have the coldest a/c around, i would take it to a shop and have them test the system it could be the condensor (radiator looking thing hanging from the trunk lid,), Kevin

Then for now I'll just used the 'ol electrical tape trick.
Kevin, thanks for all your help. Now go to sleep - it's late.
