Time to disassemble 72 for paint?
I would appreciate rough guidance from those that have done it before, how much time is a reasonable expectation for someone disassembling a 72 for the first time to send it off to paint? I'm assuming it will be relatively slow with lots of bagging, tagging and photos, but I've heard a few wildly varying estimates. Just trying to set an achievable goal for myself. Thanks!

She is already in primer from previous owner, but getting blasted again as driver's side rocker (at least) needs some metal work. So I need to take all the hardware off for the blasting. Original color is Irish Green, TBD what it will be this time.

The best friend you can have is patience. As for how long to strip a car is guess everyone goes at a different rate. 2 months to maybe 3-4 depending what you find along the way and to what level reusing the original parts you want. After media blasting you may find more than just the rockers rusted. In fact, count on it! It's taken me a up to a week to get a single bolt lose (b-blaster) so I don't damage something else. Meantime while that is simmering you move onto another area of disassembly. Allow several days to get rusty bolts, nuts & screws off, this isn't a race, but a methodical process.
As you strip keep notes on what needs to be replaced and order them while the car is getting painted. I kept a spreadsheet so I wouldn't order parts twice. The hard part is getting it all back on the car in the right sequence and place. You might also fall victim to a few while your in there items too. Getting the car painted sounds like a simple project, but you'll find things can go south or at least sideways in a hurry. Good luck!

besides the time, if you are in SFO - where are you going to store it all?
not many 3 car garages in the city, which is about what you'll need |

Took me 3 weeks to strip everything off my '72 coupe last fall. Faster than average, but a.) I'm retired and have plenty of time to spare for garage work; and b.) this isn't my first time, but more like my 5th. (Yes, I'm a serial car restorer.)
Paint and body took 4 1/2 months. Reassembly 2 1/2 months. ![]() ![]() ![]()

This house has a very large storage "cave" under it thanks to being on a hill. When trans and motor come out they go to get rebuilt. I already have nearly a car worth of parts here, fresh front suspension, two sets of aluminum trailing arms, an entire roof clip. It is a time issue for me, and that is the one nice side effect of covid that I'm hoping to take advantage of in the next several months.

Arne, you should come for a holiday to New Zealand. Honestly, you'd love it here.

Then I got to thinking “I’ve got a couple of weeks to do this “ , and decided to start on a corona virus garage project instead . ![]() At work I’d expect it to be done in 2 days , at home I planned for 4 days . I’m now 5 weeks in and it still isn’t finished
