Shifter Bushing Access
 

I started to inspect my shifter bushings today, and replace if necessary. However, I'm struggling to get the center console out. Do I need to remove the contol heads for the climate control and fader/flasher? Don't want to disassemble more than necessary, or lead to more work later.

Any help appreciated.

No detail on the console.

No need to remove the controls. The hidden screw (rear of console under carpet) is sometimes a bit tough to deal with. I found the cover separated easily from the control component housing, and I just laid everything over on the side while I worked. 101 Projects is a great resource if you are planning to replace the bushings.

I've removed the console from the tunnel, even the hidden screw. I can't get access to the shifter though, thought I would have to lift the console over the the shift lever and knob. I've got 101 projects, so I have that level of information.

I'll go give it a try again.

OK, got to it. The wire bundle to the control heads did not have much slack, had to pull slack through the tunnel.

All bushings replaced except the ones on the shift coupler. The bushing on the passenger side of the shift coupler was in pieces, what a mess, really nothing holding the coupler straight on that side. Anyone ever seen anything like that before? Hard to believe it shifted at all, let alone that it actually was shifting pretty well. Now, trying to get the pin out of the coupler. If I can't get it tonight, I'll have to take it into the shop to have it pressed out, or just buy a new one. I'm off to scan the archives now.
