Steering Rack Noise

Trying to determine if the noise from the rack in my 1967 912 is normal or ??? I made a video of the rack movement, let me know if this sounds right or if you have an idea on what I should check on.

Thanks,

Brian :)

Definitely not normal. I've just disassembled two midyear racks and I'm seeing a lot of wear, though your particular noise sounds like something is rubbing against the steering shaft as it only happens on rotations. I would first check all the shafts that they are clear in the smugglers box of anything rubbing / touching. There's a needle bearing in a rubber housing on the upper shaft. This needle bearing gets dirty and there are several aftermarket suppliers via our host for a full replacement.

As for the rack itself. If you still have the issue, you might remove it and bench test it to isolate the sound. Furthermore, the rack components wear quite a bit. On the two I just disassembled, the first had a bent rack, the second had a badly worn section of the rack. Both were gunked up and needed the bearings cleaned or replaced.

There's a forum member making a service kit for the rack that includes a new puck and end bushings. I think more people need this kit than we all think.

Thanks for the info Duane, I will do some searching and see if I can find the gentleman with the service kits!

before pulling it out, you can also check the grease in it by pulling the port cover underneath
