Is it possible to change just the outer CV joint torn boot?

Bentley 911 Carrera Service Manual states: “On all but the 84 models only the inner CV joint is replaceable separately. The outer joint must be replaced with the axle shaft.”

Then, is it not possible to replace just the torn outer CV joint boot and inspect/repack the original CV joint? It seems odd that the outer CV joint cannot be removed from the axle shaft and the Torn CV joint boot replaced.

Sure. Disconnect and tap off the inner joint and boot. Remove the clamps from the outer boot and cut off the boot or slide it off the shaft. Slide the new boot on and clamp it. It's easier if you can suspend the shaft horizontally instead of letting it hang down.

I would do both at the same time. It’s easiest to take the entire CV shaft out and put it in a vice. I just replaced all 4 boots and 2 joints on my 87.

Taking it out requires dealing with the outer nut that's torqued bigtime and disconnecting the lower shock bolt. Easiest, to me, is do it in situ.

Ya, that outer nut on the stub axle is about 340 ft-lbs worth of twist. I’d rather not mess with that.

Porsche also recommends replacing the nut.

Well, I initially tried doing it all from under the car. Unless you have a lift removing two more bolts even though the outer nut was torqued to kingdom come it was a much easier job.

I just put a 3 foot pipe on my breaker bar, had someone stand on the brakes and it came off easily with just putting my weight on it.

Getting the CV joint off required some hitting and I couldn’t get it off from under the vehicle.
