Photos 3.2 Heating Mods for SSI's

Can anyone assist me with some photos and or list of parts for the heater mods that need to be done when fitting 3.2 SSI's. I just ordered a set and now need to collect the parts for the work I'm going to do in the future.

I'm in the same boat, but I've got a couple months until installation.

You will need both ducts from the sides of the fan, new heater hoses, the two oil lines, and a 2 in muffler.

Pelican sells everything you need, but you may have to slightly modify the left side duct to clear the distributor. If you are on a budget or DIY minded you can modify your existing ducts to work. There are some threads that have discussed doing that.

the ducts you need are-
Pelican Parts - Product Information: 930-106-321-01-PH

Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-106-322-01-PH

The oil lines are the ones listed under the SSIs on Pelican.

Pelican sells the hoses, but most people go with aircraft hoses (2.5" SCAT or SCEET hose I believe) from somewhere else.

Like I said, I haven't actually done this yet, and this is all from research the past couple days, so someone more experienced might help more.

do you plan on keeping the heater blower assembly, or are you planning on doing a backdate? Either way, some modifications will be necessary.

Read up on SSIs with a 3.2, not much bang for the buck because of the plumbing sizes

This is the truth.

The benefit is more about the cleaning up of the engine bay due to heating backdate, and essentially a "forever" fix to leaking heat exchangers. (Mine leak exhaust into the cabin). Less weight behind the rear axles, and a better "sound" are also benefits - as is the "instant heat" function of SSIs - making the heating backdate sort of a double benefit - removal of the blower and more heat.

The 15HP gain is pretty small potatoes for the money spent, at least on a 3.2 car. But hey, after a chip and SSIs, the gains start to get really expensive.

From what im told by my tuner there are noticeable gains in torque through mid range rpm which is what i am interested in. Plus they look great and it cleans up the engine bay i intend on doing a heater backdate.

I forgot about the flattening of the torque curve. For around-town driveability, this a a real plus. Even more of a plus than the top-end HP gain, IMO.

Yeh i agree given my car will be mostly street use but i have a long term plan for the car which i think the ssi,s will complement so i grabbed one of the last sets at a reasonable cost given the change in manufacturing and possible costs rising in the future.

Here are the 3.2 engine tin pieces I eventually powder coated for an engine project. Compare with your pieces:

What's different?
- Drivers side piece along the valve cover, early 911 (shorter than 3.2 version)
- Drivers side square hose opening, early 911
- Pass. side connector from engine cooling shroud to hot air hose
- Rear splash pan at rear is from an early 911 with slight notching mods to clear the hyd. chain tensioner lines. Your pan will work except for blocking off the existing air passage hole on the driver's side.

Other posts will help ID the part numbers if buying new. Hope this helps.

Those I had figured out for my 3.2 - the parts I think I will need are the ones over the valve covers and the ones with the hose holes - is that true?

When I put my SSI's on, I routed my heat this way -- I ran the forced air fan right to the drivers side air box (killer heat). For the passenger side, I simply ran the air box to a high temp hose that terminated above the muffler, with a wire mesh over it to keep stones etc out.

This give awesome heat to me, the driver, and ok heat to the passenger... the logic being I'm crazy enough to drive in sub freezing weather top down, but most likely a passenger is not.

For me, it works great.

It does that very well...

Dang, JJ, that looks good. Tell me about what engine tin you had to change for the SSI installation. The two duct pieces alongside the fan, OK. What about the pieces over the valve covers? The small pieces with the holes for the ducts?

Eric

I did it on the cheap. Bough the square pieces with the holes (from "tom1394 racing" I think) for the hoses and cut the other one to length and use some rustolium paint.

I'll find the photos and post them later today.

This isn't the best illustration, but the circled part you need is the drivers side from an early 911 ('74 and before). Also need the square tin adjacent to it with the duct-sized hole. Note: the driver and passenger side (#29) are not interchangeable.

Part #26 is the same on all engines up to 3.2. Beyond that?

Caveat: The circled part is actually a version for an MFI engine (Notice the hot air tube). Non-MFI engines don't have this tube.

Not sure if Pelican has this illustration in their catalog. It can also be found at Auto Atlanta's website (no affiliation).

Thank you.

I was actually thinking that I might cut a hole in my existing part. It doesn't look that complicated. Famous last words, right?
