first make sure that the levers are actually opening the valve, sometimes the cable breaks and thats that. if they are ok, check out the ventilation unit behind the dash and make sure everything is connected as far as ducting and control cables

Was your car stored for any length of time over the winter? I found a rodent's nest plugging one hose 2 yrs. back. Now when I park the car, I pull the levers up and close off the bottom of the heater valves.

Could be as Jason suggested, cables and ducting. Once I found a broken heater hose (aluminum wrapped in brown paper) from the fan to one of the heat exchangers. My $.02

Having the same problem...just changed valves, exchangers and today the blower moter....some heat, but nothing to write home about. Should have checked the valves when I had it up on stands with the wheels off today...sigh, if you hit on a solution, let us know.

Speaking of: On my 84 Carrera when I pull the right lever I get a terrible smell which comes in with the heat. The previous owner (who I'm discovering was less than honest) said that she spilled some dog kibble into one of the vents or whatever and hasn't had the chance to fish them out. So, where do I find these vents or whatever so that I can fish them (whatever they are) out?
Thanks

Dog Kibbles in one of the vent??????
What does it smell like other than terrible?
Does it smell like burning oil? Do you have any oil leaks?
Oil leaking onto the heat exchanger, Fix is to stop the leaks.

Does it smell like a dead animal decaying?
Could be a small rodent has climb into heat exchanger perhaps through the heater valve and die inside. Replace heat echanger.

jeffk1, I just diconnected all the hoses and blew w/ air (shop vac/blower) from the front compartment back (so I didn't lodge debris in the front blower). You probably had critters in there if the car was stored w/out hoses.

Heat exchanger are underneath the car, they look like mufflers but are really headers with shrounding around them. The muffler is connected to the heat exchangers.
