Multimeter/Tachometer advice

My electrical multimeter can be a little clumsy for use with the car, so I’m thinking about getting a multimeter that’s dedicated to the garage.

I found this one that has the volt, ohm, ammeter and continuity function, plus dwell and tach. It would be nice to have a digital representation of RPM while tuning the Weber’s, but if it’s not accurate or if it’s all over the map,it’s not worth a damn, so I’m wondering if anyone knows if meters like these can effectively measure rpm on our cars.

I'm attaching a screenshot of the instructions for this meter. Will this work with Porsche CDI ignitions?

Your MY 911?

That coil connection was SOP for standard 12V based breaker point/coil ignition (up to ~69’). Electronic ignition boxes use the points as a low voltage signal for the electronics. There isn’t enough signal strength for old school dwell meters to work with electronic-based ignition with that connection.

i use a similar multimeter from "UNI T" to check rpm and dwell.

if I remember well it is model UT107

i suppose yours and mine share same electonics/motherboard (from China)... mine works well and i hood it in the same exact way as in figure you posted (red to negative side of the coil and black to the ground).

many reported anyway that old analog dwell meters are the best for 911s.... always if i remember well gunson has a good old-style meter in their catalog
