Bump...Side mirror broke

While cruising today I hit a bump and the glass from my mirror fell off. Crap, do I really need to spend $120 on a replacement? Anyone have experience on how to replace ( ie part number, replacement how to, etc). Thank you.

Mirrors are not held on with adhesive. Instead there are three clips attached to the back of the mirror with female receivers in the flag housing. No wonder it fell off. You may want to locate the three round receivers, clean them out and buy a proper mirror. You bought aPorsche, and parts come with a Porsche price tag. Want cheap, this is not the car to own.

Ahh...thanks Bob. That helps a lot. I'll buy that part and hopefully get it back on the road real soon. It was weird driving home without that side mirror!

So what exactly are we looking at. The glass is missing, but the base is still attached?

I haven't done any digging yet, but I suspect the PO glued a generic mirror to the mounting plate. I'll figure out the best way to remove the glue and post what I learn. I do love the adventure these cars provide on and off the road.

Just removed my mirrors last week. This is what the back of the mirror and receiver should look like

I think mirror glass is held by an adhesive to the plate with the three clips on RSBob´s picture.

Looks like you only need to find a mirror with the same dimensions which you can simply glue on and save $100 for a rainy day.
The other option is the used parts forum, post a WTB.

How did PO get the glue to stay solid over the large oval hole?

The mirror is made of of two parts that are held together with adhesive. the mirror glass and the electrically heated (defrost) backing plate. It is fairly common for the old adhesive to fail and have the mirror glass shatter on the ground below. You can get replacement glass in both flat or convex that comes with double sided adhesive to stick back on in place of the original glass. readily available on eBay. because of the gap between the new glass and the heating element, the mirror defrost will probably not be as efficient as original, but the mirror will reflect again.

Except for the flag mirror base (which has a different angle on the bottom to suit the door) I believe they're identical. At least for the electric mirrors of the same year.
