another 3.6 conversion fired up
Real close to another one hitting the road, lit the motor this weekend and it fired right up. Idle is really smooth compared to the CIS.
Mount the sway bar, rear bumper, drivers seat and wheels before its ready for a test drive. Minor adjustments will probably be needed to the shift linkage / coupler. Thermostat has not yet opened so I have not verified oil tight connections to the front of the car. If I leave work at a decent hour I should be on the road tomorrow! |
is this your car that is almost done? or are you helping out someone else?
can you tell us about what engine you selected and what your down time and costs were? thanks david |
My '78 Targa, engine is a '91. Went with the B&B header option. Down time was considerable because of two boys under the age of three and working 60 hours a week in a job that probably needs 80. I started in late October but estimate that I spent 50 hours on it. I work slow and sporadic!
I'm going to try to get by with a Carrera fender cooler with one Elephant Racing line, might open up the headlight bucket on the one or two 90 degree days we have here and change the second oil line. While your in theres included pedal cluster rebuild, new 23mm MC, rebuilt front calipers, rear shocks and several misc. items. Future plans include bigger torsion bars and bushings, fiberglass front and rear bumpers (RSR style), 7 and 9 Fuchs (cookies on there now) and interior. But for now I just want to drive! |
Where do you 3.6 transplant guys get all your motors? Are they mucho dinero? Just curious...not like I'm going to drop a 3.6 in my 914 or anything (hmmmm, now there is an idea...just need to buy a couple lotto tickets).

Congrats--you are going to love every second driving it now even more-it absolutely transforms the car into a beast.
|
Rob, Congrats on the progress! but the bad news is one Carrera fender mount will definitely not be sufficient. The elephant lines may help as will opening the valance hole, but I would plan on at least a small valance mount or another large fender mount on the other side.

welcome to the dark side!

There are a few 3.6, 2 x 3.8 :) and one 3.9  coming up soon also.

Very Nice!
do you use the same DME unit as the 3.6 only with a custom chip? Should we take bets on how long the 915 will last? |
Wow 3.9? Are they CMW parts or custom built by somewhere else?
|
the trans should have no problems
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa... 049_small.jpg My 3.8 is built to RS spec w/ 51.5mm intakes, the other 3.8 has even happier cams and 52mm intakes, the 3.9 is a CMW w/ 56mm intakes  They all need to have custom chips burned on a dyno. |

Good job Rob. Another 78SC with the power to weight ratio to eat up the 993 and 996. Keep you foot out of first gear and your 915 should last, depending on it's current condition. Do recheck the CV bolts. Mine have backed out a couple of times. I finally reassembled with some medium grade locktite to see if that solves the problem. What is this 3 3.6 conversions recently fired up in the last couples months?
And welcome to the SC dark side. Muuuhhhhaaaahhaaaaa! Bill, you are just sick! How us mortals supposed to keep up with the Jones with you and Jack! |
Paul, Mine is the wimp of that bunch, Dr. T had a 3.8 production line going in his shop.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa... 012_small.jpg I kind of liked this shot though. |

We need to see some pictures of the mill in the engine room. Drop me a line when she's on the road. There's a brew with your name on it at the Longhorn. |
Nice job guys! There really ought to be one place to collect all of the info on theses swaps so that someone that wants to cross over so to speak can easily collect ideas.
|
Bill's right, I was holding out hope that with our mild temps I would be okay. The 10 mile drive to work, no traffic, proved otherwise. Temps hit 9:00 right as I pulled into the parking lot. Outside temp was mid fiftees.
The cooler is the cheap part, its the bumper needed to mount it in and then what to do about WA requirment for a front plate? |
I have a cooler in each front fender. It's not as effective as having one front and center, but it works.
|
Very cool Bill. Any ideas about the expected output from the 3.9? The CMW conversions always intrigued me but there haven't really been any writeups about their product.
|
Hey Bill, Looks great! Any more pics or info?
