Darrin - thanks for the info. As my 79 911 RoW 3.0 with Sportomatic and AC shares engine oil with the transmission, and as I’m in S Florida, I’m looking for the most effective setup to provide maximum cooling. Do the Carrera coolers normally have integral fans or would that be an add on? Better to go with a Porsche unit or would aftermarket measurably better? Clint

I live in so. California and swapped out the trombone cooler for a Carrera cooler 17 years ago. Never installed a fan. Never see oil temps above 9 o'clock. Also never drive to L.A. in the summertime.

+1 for the Carrera style oil cooler. Made that upgrade to my ‘83 SC motor a few years ago. Don’t cheap out, buy good proven equipment.
You might as well install a fan while you are at it. I’ve got one controlled by a switch on my dash. Typically only turn on the fan in traffic and usually leave it off while cruising on the freeway. I also installed an extra oil temperature gauge for the Carrera front fender cooler. I like seeing the consistency of oil temperatures between the two oil temp gauges.

I live in Tampa and have installed a Carrera type cooler with a manually controlled fan on my 82 SC. On hot days under some conditions like in town traffic, it is necessary to turn on the fan to keep temps below 220 degrees. Since you are in a similar climate area, I would definitely recommend the fan.

I’m in Miami driving a 911 for over 30 years, you need fans on both the oil cooler and the A/C condenser.

elephant racing is a good resource for this -- they have both cooler and fan kits available and good service https://www.elephantracing.com/porsche/911/oil-cooling-for-911/oil-cooler-kits/

The trombone “cooler” is a decent interim solution. It’s usually borderline effective under trying circumstances. If so, replace it with a proper cooler.
